Yes, a router is needed to get access to the internet. Contact the cable company and ask them for a router.

The cable company will charge him for internet, if they aren't already.  Make sure you check with them to see how much his monthly bill will increase.

Hi, I am maybe your Grandfathers age or older, 86.  I have had an HP Chrome for about five years and love it.  I use to have the PC laptops, but the Chrome is so much easier to use.

When you get the internet, if he makes less than 27,500 a year, he can get a 30.00 discount on the internet through his internet company.  Look up Affordable Connectivity ptogram(ACP).  1-877 384-2575.

He can fill out the application online and upload his income.  When approved, he contacts whatever internet company he chooses and most will approve. I have comcast or ixfinity as it is called. You can also email them ACPSupport@usac.org.

If it's just the Chromebook then high-speed internet is not needed. Tell the cable company that all you need is enough speed for the laptop. The faster the internet speed means the more it will cost.

I don't understand. If he's already paying for internet, there should be a router somewhere if I'm not mistaken. Or maybe there just a wired modem w/o wifi.

If he has internet, I assume he also has at least a modem, or a modem/router combo. Look at the model of whatever equipment he already has.

If he has a modem/router combo, he doesn't need a separate router.

If he only has a modem, he would need a router or a modem/router combo if he wants to connect wirelessly.

Some notebooks don't have ethernet ports to connect with a wire, but there are adapters to do that.

Where does his phone plug in?  I'm guessing it's plugged into a router.  If that's the case, he won't need another one.
