Many times the hashtag really isn't being used for it's real purpose, people are using the idea of #isntthiscrazy just to add emotion to their posts and to look cool.

Yes, that's where it gets confusing and sometimes annoying, on Facebook anyway...

Re: ~~ What Is The Difference Between Twitter and Tweet? ~~

A hashtag becomes a clickable link in any Tweet. Clicking one will bring up every other Tweet that has used the same hashtag. If many people use the same hashtag, it will become more popular and show up on the Trending page. There are many hashtags that people use every day and some that people make up that only get used once or by a few random people.

Here's an example of how a hashtag can work: The Miss Representation Project has a #NotBuyingIt hastag that people can use to tag a Tweet about sexism in advertising or products. When Marvel released a boys' Avengers t-shirt that read "Be a hero" and a girls' that read "I need a hero," people could Tweet a picture of the shirts with a message about how girls can also be heroes and add the #NotBuyingIt hashtag to get the message out and make it trend.

Hastags help people find each other based on similar interests. Many conservatives on Twitter use the #TCOT hashtag on every post. It stands for Top Conservatives on Twitter and if someone does a search for the hashtag, the person will get all the Tweets tagged with #TCOT and be able to connect with other conservatives they may want to follow on Twitter.

Wow ! Thank you all for the replies. I think I am beginning to understand and will try it out. Sometimes on HLN, they will say to send a reply to #somethingorother and I'd like to perhaps be involved. Thanks again !!

I like to use my twitter acct. to have updates from my local news and weather plus People Magazine too. I have also noticed the ""hashtag"" will lead you the that topic or person's tweet acct.

Twitter is the ""thing""

Tweet (type) is what you do on the ""thing""

Tweets are for birds.

Twitter are for dummies (twits).

Hashtag is the number the kitchen staff uses for your breakfast order.
