And what does "hashtag" mean? I know it's #, but how do you do it? My dh and I just got smart phones last summer and started texting, but I am wondering about these other social media items. I don't want to take a lot of your time, but just a quick answer will help. TIA

Twitter is the phenomenon and tweets are the messages put out. Tweeting is writing tweets.
Can't help you with the hashtag thing though.

the hashtag marks keywords or topics in a tweet.
you place it before something you want to bring attention to - #likethis

Twitter is just another way of communicating with people -- just like forums and message boards (QVC's for example) are.
Here is a guide that will explain how it works:

I am learning as well...I am not a fan, and prefer the good old tele.
When hashtag became the new I said enough.

Twitter is a website =https://twitter.com/
Tweet is what you type on the Tweeter website.

It can get confusing!

Twitter = noun
Tweet = verb
Hashtag = way to bookmark or categorize whatever the subject matter is on many sites. If you put the # right before a word, no spaces - like #qvcdiscount, and if others did the same thing in their post, you would be able to search and find all the posts that contain that hashtag. Kind of like a master thread, unconnected to each other, but all would have something to do with that hashtag. Many times the hashtag really isn't being used for it's real purpose, people are using the idea of #isntthiscrazy just to add emotion to their posts and to look cool.

Not sure if it works this way in twitter since I don't use twitter, but using #hashtag in a Facebook post allows everyone to click on the #hashtag to pull up all of the public posts pertaining to the topic of the #hashtag
So, if you post a public photo of your dog, you #hashtag the photo #dog and everyone including yourself can click on the #hashtag and see all the #dog posts. Fun, huh.
