Agree with Itiswhatitis about being able to find good info at MS and also by Googling a problem. There are always others with the same problem and often helpful responses to help them. ![]()
Gokat - yesterday, on this Win8.1 computer, I had an update called KB3161606, but not an 08. Is that the same thing you mentioned?

I agree, too, @chickenbutt , but in this case the Update situation is new so there wasn't any solid info to be had. I don't jump on Updates as some other users here do as I've learned through the years not to to avoid these merry-go-rounds!![]()
You've confused me here. This discussion deals with Win 7.
I had an update called KB3161606, but not an 08.
What does the highlighted area refer to?

Sorry to be unclear. I saw mention of an update called KB3161608 and I found it curious that on my Win8.1 machine I had one called KB3161606. Was just wondering if that was the same thing.
OTOH, I think I might be confused so I"m sorry about that, too. I'm not having a good day and am pretty brain-fuzzy. ![]()
Hope you are doing well. You help people so much here and I hope you don't think that goes unnoticed or unappreciated.

Thanks, @chickenbutt . I help when I can, and I receive lots of help in other areas on this forum so it all evens out in the wash!
As to the "fuzzies". I totally get it!

I assume you read the article I linked above related to Win 7. If not, it does explain the mess, but I didn't have that when I started researching a few days ago...she says as she rolls her eyes.

I haven't yet, but I think I should. Two of my current laptops have Win7. I did a bunch of updates on one of them last week, or a few days ago (whenever that waas - sorry), and it took FOREVER and a day for them to go. Finally they did and all seems well, but I'll have to get myself knowledgeable if there is a problem and anything I need to do to fix it.
Maybe on another day when I'm not sick.
Thanks, again and thanks for being the kind person that you are!

Thanks itiswhatitis and chickenbutt for mentioning checking on MS for help for others that don't know--that's actually where I first went to to get help with this update problem starting in April. I just forgot to mention MS when I said I went to askwoody.com, etc. The MS community boards were where I found the particular update I needed to manually install each month in order to get the other updates to download and install in a normal amount of time instead of hours on end. It's a great place to get help!

Hope my response doesn't appear twice (for some reason my first one didn't show up). Anyway, you're right, itiswhatitis, about going to MS community boards. I didn't mention going there previously when I said I went to askwoody, inforworld, etc, but that was actually the first place I went to about the update problem. They were a great help (unlike calling MS technical support--what a laugh!). Thanks to the people on there, I found out each month since April which update to manually install which then enabled the remaining updates to be downloaded and installed in a normal amount of time. Thank goodness for them!

You won't be able to install the other updates until you follow the directions in my last post. The subject Optional Update is the fix and will take care of the speed, etc., once it's installed.
You say you've been reading about this so you know this is happening to many people. It probably happened here, but I leave my pc running so that updates can be downloaded through the night, as well as other housekeeping functions.
You'll need to be patient. Keep your computer running and let the Updates come through for as long as it takes. They're running in the background so the worst that will happen is that your computer will slow down a little. Don't shut down your computer. Just let it run. Once you get the update, just follow my directions above. The first one will be slow. After that...the rest will be speedier!
PS...Hot off the press, but you read it here first!
@Gokat I took a look at this article and tried two things. I attempted to install KB3020369 only to find out I already had it. Then I proceeded to install Rollup KB3161608 (which I didn't have and installed). I had 18 important updates and clicked to install them, and lo and behold they were installed!!!! I can't tell you how relieved I am.This fiasco caused me 2 weeks of aggravation! I want to thank you once again for all your help and patience with all of this! Oh yeah one more thing if you don't mind, do you install the optional updates as well as the important ones?

Now that I have GWX installed, I install all the optional, as well as the important updates, @Jordan2.
The reason it's especially important to do this now (since the rollups have been coming through) is that you really don't know the impact one update has on another so if you don't install them all problems can arise down the line; i.e. KBxxx0369 was installed May 2015, and now the slow update fix is contingent on that one being installed.
Glad you're back up to speed...Pun intended!
Enjoy this glorious weekend!
