Just do the check on the GWX settings I provided and call it a day.  I haven't done my Updates yet from Tuesday, and I don't plan to for another week.

At your leisure, you can check the information I've listed below to be sure the settings on GWX are correct so you can relax in that regard:

 

Just double-click on the "10" square to enter it.

Click to change Windows Update settings. (should show on your screen.

Also, FYI, there is a black bar across the top of the GWX Control Panel program screen.  The "10" in the upper lefthand corner can be clicked to access some housekeeping available for the program, including Check for Updates.

 

If you're interested, the User Manual for the program is at the lower right of the GWX screen.

 

NOW for the second problem...the perpetual download when you attempt to download your updates.  That is a problem with the recently released Windows 7 update KB3161664.  This happens (more often lately) when MS sends through updates without debugging them.  You did not cause this. You have a couple of options. 

 

1.  Ignore your Updates for a week or so and allow MS to send through a correction which will take care of it.  (That would be my suggestion.)  I always wait at least a week before installing Updates as I've experienced problem updates several times and waiting usually circumvents them.

 

                                 OR

 

2.  Run a System Restore using the day/date before you originally installed the update (Tuesday?).  If you do this, the GWX Program will be wiped so you'll need to reinstall it after the System Restore completes.  Hold off on Updates for another week or so to give MS a chance to make the correction.

 

My main concern is that you get GWX installed so that you don't have to deal further with the Win 10 forced install as that will be ongoing...at least until the end of July.

@Gokat, I cleared the Cache and all my updates disappeared and now it says I have never checked for updates (which I have daily). I searched for updates and it goes on and on. Now what do I do? I did a restore of my system to 6/16/16 (that was recommended), but it didn't bring the updates back.

System Restore does just that, @Jordan2.  It takes you back to the date you set it to restore to...before you searched for updates.  That's why your search/download doesn't show. 

 

Please stop searching for updates.  MS will re-download them to your computer when they recognize that you've restored your computer back to 6/16. 

 

In the meantime, please reinstall the GWX Control Panel before you attempt any updating so that it can intercept any of the Win 10 forced install updates.  HTH'sWoman Happy

@Gokat You must think I'm an idiot but I promise you I'm not (just when it comes to computers)! I installed the GWX Control Panel prior to the 16th. It shows up in the list of programs I have installed and the icon appears on my home screen, so I thinking it is still installed.

Lol! Don't be silly, @Jordan2.  That's not how it works.  After all, I never know when I'm gonna be lookin' for some more Driscoll's strawberries, but I know who to ask when I do!Woman LOL 

 

Your updates will be coming back through from MS automatically so you don't need to search for them.  They may already be downloading.  It doesn't take long.  When they do download you will see a notification pop-up in the lower righthand corner of your computer screen to tell you have new Updates available and there will be an Update icon in the Notifications area.   You should be fine from here on out.  Just stay away from searching for Updates and let them download on their own.Woman Happy

@Gokat you have been so helpful and I know I'm pushing my luck but I could use your help again if you don't mind! I have the whole Windows 10 thing settled. However, now I checked for updates which took forever, and now the updates will not install. I have tried to find a solution myself. I have been referred to a website to download Smart PC Fixer and another Regcure. I am hesitant to download something not knowing if it's safe. Any advise you have would be greatly appreciated.

@Jordan2, I think I had the problem you are describing.  It doesn't have anything to do with the Win 10 software -- although it is good that you installed the GWX Control Panel as @Gokat suggested.  I did that a month or so ago at her suggestion.  :-)

 

I suddenly was unable to install Win 7 updates on my laptop.  I would review and select them manually, but when I hit "OK", they just wouldn't install.  The loading bar (green) didn't move at all and the percent loaded never changed from 0%.  I tried everything - malware check, defrag, CC Cleaner.

 

I finally called Microsoft and reached someone in the Philippines.  I think the number I called was 1-800-642-7676 (1-800-Microsoft).  I have to say, they were very helpful in resolving my issue.  They also took remote control of my computer, and ran hours and hours of diagnostics over a couple of days.  They somehow "upgraded" my Win 7 software.  My computer has been running better than ever (7 year old laptop) and I have no trouble installing Win 7 updates now.

You poor thing.  This MS update mess (from June updates) is really wreaking havoc on you.  Believe me, you're not alone in this.  Updates are taking hours and hours.

 

Before I do anything, please check to see if you received an Optional Update during the night. It would be KB3161608.  If you did, try to let just the one update install and give it lots of time, if needed.  This is the fix...just out.

 

If not,  I'll need to give you some directions.  I need your Windows 7 info....Do you have  the 32 or 64 bit version? If you don't know, just type into your Start Menu Search..."System Information" and look for  System Type.
