I use a mouse with both my iMac and MacBook Pro. I hate trackpads!

The only need anymore for a DVD drive would be to access and utilize older material you've got. All the programs now are available for downloading and storage/backup is on-line either in the cloud or through another on-line service. USB drives now also hold as much and more than DVDs.

My husband downloads music from borrowed CD's so he could not live with out the CD drive

Yeah, I get it. I worked for a fitness franchise that STILL uses DVDs to disseminate info, and I have a truck from 2006 that has a player that I still use for my home-made discs. Part of the routine, I guess.

Absolutely, buy direct from Apple. I would recommend the track pad over the mouse if you buy an iMac. Much more intuitive and simple, and settings can be adjusted. The back lit keyboard on the MacBook Pro is fabulous, too. I did research and then ordered over the phone for my two machines, direct from Apple. So pleasant to get a few pages of black and white instructions about setting them up, so easy and simple. You are in business right away. Three years and going strong - even spilled a drink on the MacBook and it survived. My dear decrepit husband loves the iMac and he is not a computer savvy person (though he still insists on the mouse). If they still offer the rechargeable batteries for the track pad and wireless keyboard, with a charger, I would get those too, if you choose the desktop.
My macbook pro is 4 years old and it's still going strong and I'm not even tempted to look at or buy anything else! Now THAT is a first for me, as when I was a PC gal, I was always having to repair, replace or upgrade.

Yes I love my iMac. I never ever want to use Windows again. I hate it when my husband needs me to help him with his windows machine because there is yet another problem with it.

No, it's not so much a deal breaker but I was surprised but the Mac is expensive in the first place without one. I have 2 ipads and love them!
In the last few years I'v only bought Gateway and Dell. I always have problems after a couple of years. My hubby has HP and he has problems.
So I went on Amazon to check the reviews on the 2013. I could still get Applecare but if I buy it, I will go through Apple. I think Apple requires you to come to their facility with the item if bought someplace other than directly from them before they allow you to purchase Applecare.
The reviews were exceptional except for the lack of the dvd drive.

You don't have to buy directly from Apple to buy Applecare.
