Absolutely it is a scam. The IRS will not call an individual. They just had a segment on this on our local news yesterday. If your mom has an answering machine, tell her not to answer the phone unless she knows exactly who the caller is. If you even pick up the phone for a telemarketing call or a robo-call, they will sell your name to other telemarketers and you'll get more and more calls.

We were trying to figure out how many years ago it happened to us-a real call from the IRS.
Maybe 8-10 maybe more.

Apx six mos ago I got a strange call from "Windows" from a guy with an Indian accent, demanding I turn on my computer 'cause Windows needed to do a very important update. When I finally told him - well you know what I told him - he threatened to come to my home (supposedly he could tell where I lived - yah, right!). So, I copied down his number and called my local PD. They told me this scam was going around the area, stating how someone's computer was tied up for an entire day - with access to banking info, et al. The PD was working on it. Also said they would put out a warning on media warning people of this scam. (They also said not to worry - my dog had every right to protect us from intruders and would not get in trouble. I had called just in case they did track me down and came here 'cause my little honey bunny - a big girl (95lbs) - is extremely protective of us - if someone touches the gate to come to the back door without my permission - well, people tend to back off.) Anyways, definitely report this incident to the local PD so that others can be forewarned.
That's weird because I had two calls last week from an Indian sounding man saying the call was about my computer. Of course, I hung up. He called again the next day, same thing. Wow, and he threatened you. I would love for your honey bunny to meet that jerk!

MoJoV - perhaps you should notify the PD if they're hitting your area right now. From the little the PD told me, those people who listened to this guy was going thru a lot - though fortunately had figured something was amiss that evening and notified the authorities then. I do not answer calls now if I don't know the #. Also, do not answer when your name appears on your phone. Another scam. My cousin warned me about it - she had seen her husband's name and their # on the phone; he had died a month before. Guess they do it to people who have recently lost someone. But, couple months ago I got a call with my name and # on the phone so they must be spanning out. On a brighter note, my honey bunny is a P.R. rescue dog. I think she was trained in defending somehow. UPS has us noted for drivers not to enter the gate but to leave packages on sidewalk outside gate. Jade, my honey bunny must sniff all pkgs before I bring them in. One day, the mailman w/n listen to me. She put her face thru the opening at the gate and bit the corner of the box off. He suddenly listened. We now have a new mailman!
If those scammers I had mentioned had come to the house, I don't think they'd be going to another house again! The PD assured me they'd be up here w/n 5min and they did patrol the street. After I initially posted, the Fox25(BOS) news warned people of the IRS scam: one requesting info; another stating you must give add'l info to get your refund. I hope everyone becomes aware of these scammers, especially the one that seems to prey on those in mourning - a most cruel thing!

The IRS communicates only by U.S. Mail. The recorded call is a SCAM.

Yet another scam. The New York State Gaming Commission is warning consumers of recent fake lottery prize scams.New Yorkers are being told they've won a prize via phone, email, or letter. They do not notify you, you would notify them if you won. They get you by saying you've won an unclaimed prize and get you to call, get you to give info and a processing fee.The fraudulent check scam in which people receive a fake check and are told to deposit it. The consumer is then told to send back a portion of the check as a fee to get the rest of their winnings.

Another scam is a call from an older sounding man who says - "Seniors - you qualify blah blah for a medical emergency alert system" hang up immediately cuz they only want your personal info - ss number or bank/credit card data.
No this call is not from Life Line or other legit alert systems.
Funny you should mention this because my mother was getting calls for a medical alert bracelet and pain medication everyday, several times a day for a couple of weeks. On the recording it states her doctor has given the okay. I asked her doctor about this at her last appointment, he had no clue what I was talking about! My mother knows enough not to give out info, but I feel sorry for the seniors who aren't savvy enough.
This is so true. So many seniors get scammed all the time. It's too bad these crooks target the seniors. MY MIL received the scam phone call saying it was her nephew & he was in such in such & needed money to get back home. She said it sounded like him but she knew it was not him because he is deceased. If he had not been deceased she probably would have fell for the scam. She trusts everyone which is not a good thing. She is a very religious person & thinks all people are on the up & up. She really needs to get a clue. You cannot trust everyone that calls you or rings your doorbell.

I have a phone that verbally tells me the calling number/name and also shows it on the screen. I never answer any phone call unless I know who is calling. If they want to get ahold of me then they can leave a message. I don't call back if name/number is unknown. I find that these scam calls never leave a message! Another hint I learned at a security session....never have your name on your phone message. Not a good idea for the caller to know your name --too many ways they can find your address and other info. I just have a message that says "Can't get to the phone right now, leave a message".
I, too just let my machine take care of it and of course never leave a message. On one of the local stations they did an expose on so-called IRS calls. When the reporter/investigator challenged the caller the "IRS" agent cussed out and threatened him. Thank you for the tip on not using your name. I am changing that immediately!

If you Google that number, you'll see it's a scam and many others have complained. I got that phone call too. So glad I have call blocking in my phone!

You should report these calls to the local IRS office in your area.
