For the past year or so most emails to and from my sister have gone into gmail hangouts instead of my inbox. Since I never use Hangouts, I don't see them. I have spent hours online trying to figure out how to stop them from going there with no success. I know you can't get rid of Hangout (whatever that is) but surely you can stop emails from going there. Can anyone help please?

Here's a bit more about it:

Turn Hangout history on or off

and

Your Hangout history in Gmail

I hope this helps. I've never used the feature, so I'm just doing a few searches for "help" articles.

Wow. I have used Gmail for years but never heard of hangouts. But I have used my IPad for about 4 years to use to read gmail instead of my laptop. When I used my laptop, I had to set up each email source if I wanted it to be filed directly into a folder, or deleted. Otherwise it would by default go,to the inbox. I'm going to read the advice you got and check out my rarely used laptop. I picked the drop box email app for email, because it is the easiest to set up folders and file them. It just doesn't have a star capability.

Hi, Nikalette! There's also a Hangouts app, so I'm not sure which the OP is using.

In Gmail, you can go into Settings and create what they call "Filters" to direct your email to specific folders (they call folders "Labels"), to automatically delete, to forward certain messages, that sort of thing.
