Re: FIX FOR MICROSOFT FORCED WINDOWS 10 INSTALL

Gokat--Thought there might be other files, but was hoping that just eliminating that one update and hiding it might suffice. I'll install the GWX program. One other question, if you don't mind. When you say it blocks Win 10 updates, I assume you mean those that haven't been downloaded yet. Does it do anything about those that are already on your computer? Thanks!

Re: FIX FOR MICROSOFT FORCED WINDOWS 10 INSTALL

This is all explained in my original introductory post, @qualityshopper , but yes....It will scan your computer, list what it finds, delete the files, and monitor going forward.  A full explanation is set out for you at the GWX site. HTH's

Thanks so much, Gokat. Sorry I didn't think to go back to your introductory post. I just went right to the last reply and went from there. I will install this tonight. Again, thanks for the great help.

Re: FIX FOR MICROSOFT FORCED WINDOWS 10 INSTALL

I am SO happy to find this thread. I am very tired of Microsoft being so slimey in the way they are forcing this.

I have one computer that does have Windows 10 on it, bought it with it already installed. I am not particularly impressed.

The updates for Windows 10 are even screwing up my new computer! What they are trying to do is force the 10 install permanently, kill Windows 8 (which they are doing by not servicing it anymore), and killing Internet Explorer forever.

They took away the option of "notify me when updates are available" on Windows10 so the Win 10 updates are forced. No one can seem to find a way to stop it (reading techie boards, everyone is angry).

The latest update kills IE. IE wont surf. Won't open new tabs, just won't travel...period. Frozen. Exactly as they want. I uninstall that update over and over and I can't get it to stop.

Microsoft wants every user to use their "Edge" browser. I won't. Edge browser is a handholding deal with Bing (default search engine), Microsoft, and ??? (can't think of the third party). Hugest data mining trio EVER. If you turn off things because you don't agree with the "what we collect" policy, fine, then Edge just won't work. That is forcing their privacy policy also. You HAVE to agree if you want your computer to work.

I did scour the tech boards to find the option to change search engine to Google (they already have everything they need to know on me, Bing doesn't need it too!). The setting is buried deep, I never would have found it. So, there is a way to not use Bing (for now).

Microsoft is being so seedy, so disrespectful, so aggressive I do not want Win 10 to auto download on my Win 7. Every update for Win 10 that comes in now is messed up. It is obvious they are still finishing up the beta that was offered "for free". Ya, for free because they needed people to be using it so they could tweak it over and over. Guinea pigs, but people don't even know it!

Having a forced upgrade is going to happen to people so this program stop program is GOLD! Thanks!

They must realize that Apple will welcome us with open arms, @gabstoomuch !Woman Wink   Everywhere you read more and more pc users are making the move or are contemplating going in that direction.  I have no aversion to learning a new OS, but I truly dislike what MS is doing.  So sorry to hear just how aggressive and underhanded this is getting to be for Win 10 users.  I know as a Win 7 user, the Win 10 updates are coming through at least monthly now so, like you, I'm feeling fortunate that this little app/program came along for us.  Woman Happy

@Gokat

Thank you so much. Win 10 just started upgrading without authorization!

So glad I had this other option!

Re: FIX FOR MICROSOFT FORCED WINDOWS 10 INSTALL

I'm seeing that MS is doing this at least monthly now, @LTT1 , attempting to install Win 10 via mislabeled optional updates.  The days of auto updating are in the rearview mirror for those of us wishing to opt out for whatever reason.  Glad GWX was able to come to the rescue once again! Woman Wink

I have Windows 7 here.  Just go to your Start Menu, @Tinkrbl44... and type in "System Information" .  That should do it.Woman Happy

Glad to hear you're "free again!" !!Woman LOL

@Gokat

I installed the GWX Control panel and all the Windows 10 harrassment has stopped, I'm happy to report.

HOWEVER .....  when I start my computer I get a prompt that there are updates to install after checking with me .... but is there any way to determine what these updates are?   Should I trust that these updates are needed and click to allow them?   Am I being too paranoid here?  lol

Hi @Tinkrbl44.

GWX automatically blocks the optional mislabeled updates for you before they install.  The KB numbers to look for (Win7) are:  (optional) KBxxxx5583, 2664, 1917.   Even if they do appear as downloaded, GWX will head them off at the pass before they install.Woman Wink  As far as what the updates are related to...look on the right when you access the list of updates and there should be an explanation by update number. (Win 7) HTH'sWoman Happy
