Tink - If you look to the right side of the screen you'll see what is supposed to be an explanation, but it isn't. Then, below that there is a button you can click on that says something like 'more information'. That will bring up a MS page that actually explains what the update is.
You can usually tell right away if it is an update pertinent to upgrading to Win10 because it will have words like 'compatibility' and 'upgrade' right in the first part.
I know it takes a minute to do each one, but I've found it worth it.
Then, when I find out that a given update is one of those for Win10 Upgrade, I just right-click on the update line and choose 'hide update'. That way it won't keep coming up.
Although, I must say that I have seen that one main one that came up in 'important updates' more than once after hiding. The number should be in this forum somewhere. All I remember is that it has 3, 5, and 8 in it.

Just so it's clear, @chickenbutt, the purpose of the GWX Control app is to automatically block the optional mislabeled updates responsible for the Win 10 forced install before they install.
Yes, you can manually read and research each update, if you wish, but this app alleviates all the time-consuming need and lets some of us rest a little easier that we won't miss one when updates come through.
FYI, I posted the KB numbers historically involved with the forced update to Tink above in answer to her post.![]()

Hey Gokat! You know what? I've been so paranoid to just let them go and see if the program blocks them. I know - silly. So I have continued to put those updates on 'ignore'. Maybe I need to brave it up and see what the program does. I do have it on 'Monitor'. ![]()
Thanks for all your help! I really appreciate it and I really appreciate how you've brought this program to our attentions. I'm finding it invaluable!!

I get the paranoia, @chickenbutt . I did the manual thing for several months before I found the GWX info and confess I do tend to still scan for the culprits before allowing updates to install. Thus far, GWX has done its stuff and I'm feeling confident that it will continue to do so. The developer of the app is all over this MS heavy-handed approach so I trust him more than myself to stay on top of it.
The only suggestion I would make is to periodically check the GWX site for updates to the app as there's always a chance that MS will create new versions of the forced update/install files to up the anty. HTH's![]()

Ooh, updates for the program! How did I never think of that? Thanks for that heads up. I imagine that, due to the nature of the program, updates would be pretty important.
I donated while I was there just now. Still looking for how to find out if there are updates...
I'm seeing that my version is a slightly older number but can't seem to find how to find updates. Still looking. ![]()

Found it. D'oh! Just right-click on the '10' and it offers you choices like 'check for updates' (so simple I missed it).
The only weird thing was that it took me right to the page I was on so I just clicked on the 'stand-alone' that I used before and it didn't seem like it did anything, except bring up the console, and then I checked Secunia PSI and the version number had updated.
Hopefully, I remember that for next time. hehe (memory getting horrible!)
Thanks again!!! That was seriously invaluable information and had never occurred to me that there w/b updates to this program.

You can always check his release notes as well, @chickenbutt. In the case of this most recent, (insignificant to us) improvement he went ahead and auto updated all users. I'm sure if there's anything significant to release he'll do the same. Like you, I'm a little over-protective of my "puter" so I check periodically!

The GPX Control app that I used appears to have been hacked. My settings to "do not check for updates" has been changed by it twice!
Nasty little boogers -- those MS guys are!

The GWX program will set "Automatically install Windows Updates" to NO in GWX. If you followed the directions when installing it, Win 10 update files will automatically be blocked. I suggest you set your Windows Update Settings to: "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download or install them.", @LTT1. This would be done in Windows Update....Change Settings (on the left) in Win 7. When Updates are available they will show up in your Notifications area to be downloaded/installed when you're ready. The GWX app will do the blocking. You can rest easy. HTH's ![]()

Hey Gokat! I had mentioned the other day that I sent a contribution to the guy for this program. No biggie - have done it before and that's that.
Well, this morning I get up to a 'Thank You' email from him. How nice is that? I've never seen that when I contributed for other free softwares over the years.
Anyway, I just wanted you to know, because I think it speaks positively to this guy, and I like that.
