@Buck-i-Nana wrote:@glb613 - AT&T doesn't host their own e-mail, they use YAHOO as their e-mail host. YAHOO provides it as an att.net address, but it is YAHOO. Unfortunately, as I posted earlier the disadvantage is that for whatever reason the att.net account has to be managed through AT&T's account maintenance website not through the YAHOO account maintenance. So, when YAHOO had that big hacking issue, a lot of folks couldn't change their passwords because they no longer had access to the AT&T account maintenance.
That was not made clear in the original post. She said she had a Yahoo account and that is not dependent on the ISP you use.
It's always best to have multiple e-mail accounts and especially to have one that is not tied to your ISP. If her account is connected to AT&T, she will lose it when she changes ISP.
Big yes to this excellent advice.

E-mail services like Yahoo.com, gmail.com, aol.com and hotmail.com are not associated with a particular internet provider. So, it doesn't matter what service you have. If your e-mail is like mine, comcast.net, you will lose it when you change internet providers.
@glb613, Comcast/Xfinity customers can keep their email addresses after disconnecting service. You must access the email within the 90 days before disconnecting service, and at least once every 9 months after that.

I sure didn't know you could keep your e-mail after disconnecting your service. Seems odd to me why Comcast would do this. If you have Comcast, you know they don't do anything free of charge.
I believe it's the law these days that as long as you keep the address active, you get to keep the email address.

Thanks everyone for answering. Haven't been able to check until tonight to see what the thoughts on this were. I have a pending order with them for Uverse TV and currently have their internet. After the extremely bad customer service I experienced the other night, I had decided to cancel my pending order for the TV service, as well as to cancel my internet. After venting my frustration to one of their retention dept. agents, she was supposed to have someone above her contact me within 24 hours. Well, it's been that and more, but I've been gone, so if they tried to call, I wasn't home. There were no messages left on the answering machine, so who knows. I'll give them one more chance and then goodbye.
Just in case I can't keep my email addresses, I'll make sure to save things I want to keep and get everything else deleted. ATT's customer service seems to be much worse than Time Warner's, though none of them are very good. At least, with TWC, I can get someone to talk to in a few minutes. Anyway, thanks again everyone.

@qualityshopper, In addition to the other great advice on the thread, I wanted to mention that you also often have the option of creating a new account with another provider and then automagically 😀 migrating the messages from the old account to the new one. Several years ago, I wanted to close an old MSN email account -- I opened a new Gmail account and then imported all the contacts and the messages to Gmail before closing the MSN account.

I cancelled my old ATT Internet service 5 years ago, and my att.net email address has remained active. Hope yours does, as well!

Hookedonq--That's good to hear. I'm going to go ahead, though, and clear out all my email just in case. ATT has made me so angry the last few days with trying to get clearcut answers to the questions I had. Constantly got different answers, depending on the person I talked to. I am so done with ATT. Worst customer service ever!
