I just saw this thread and was able to sign up for the email. Not sure when or if I will ever get the invitation but this thing looks really neat! Thanks for posting here and letting us know about it and your experiences with it. Hope I can get one; in my family I'm the gadget queen!! I don't want to let them down by not getting in on this ASAP!

Maybe it is just me, but I would not want a device in my home that will be listening all the time. It reminds me of the listening device in "1984." Paranoia strikes deep. Does anyone know if Amazon will be collecting usage info?

You may want to go and check the privacy policy concerning this device.

It doesn't listen to you unless you say it's name to wake it up.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. With cell phones, laptops, video gaming consoles, baby monitors, home security systems, and tablets all with microphones (and in many cases cameras) built in, to say nothing of "normal" phones, pretty much anyone with the proper resources who wants to listen to you already can. They don't need you to buy a new gadget. There were rumors for a while that the government (the NSA) had figured out a way to use home phones as listening devices even while they were hung up. The phone's microphone is still pulsing with sound waves and reportedly they were able to figure out a way to monitor the stray voltages generated by those pulses even with the phone hung up. The government has also been reported to be able to bounce a laser off of a window and monitor the vibrations coming off the window glass to recreate the sounds in that room. If you want to be paranoid about people listening to you, you needn't worry about the Echo. There are lots and lots of other options out there for them to exploit.

Here is a Wiki about the "Echo" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Echo .There is a statement about privacy.

And a little more about privacy.

I would be fine with waiting to get one as long as ALL prime members get the invite eventually. If they don't make it available to every prime member, that is just not fair. Waahhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

I keep checking my email everyday in hopes that I will get an invite. This is no way to do business. Why not make it available to all prime members first without waiting to be one of the lucky ones to get the chance to buy it? It's not like I would be getting it for free, I'm going to pay for it! I'm a prime member and if I don't get in on the $99 price, I'm not buying it!
