@Venezia  Thanks for your reply. You are correct that you have to open the emal to see the keep as new at the top header in the New/Old mail setting.  If you switch to the Unified Inbox style, the save as new can disappears from the top header and you have to click on more before you see the keep as new option.  I am using the free online version of AOL.  Are you using the same version?

All I know is I used to be able to sort by from, subject or date then one day it stopped without me changing any settings making it way more difficult to batch delete and file. Oh well, I guess I get what I pay for.

@lizzys- Yes, I use the free online version.  I can't remember ever paying for AOL.

The only way I can see to group emails is to use the search option; under the "compose" icon, at least on my screen, is the search box.  You can search by "From/to" or "Subject".  Not sure that's much help for what you want to do.  I've used it in the past to file all the emails from one sender.

@Venezia Thanks for your reply.  When I put "From/to" or "Subject" in the search box, it just searches for the word from or to or subject.  It doesn't sort them by the from etc.  PLease tell me what I am doing wrong.  Thank you!

@apple1964- AOL has nothing to do with whatever internet service you have, any more than any other email service or website.

What for an internet service provider (ISP) you have determines that.

@lizzys- I can't paste of copy of the search box without capturing my personal information, but I think this might explain it:

When you see the "Search" box in the upper left-hand corner, it has a little down arrow on the left.  Click on that and a drop-down menu appears.  Select "From/To", for instance.  The box will then show "From/To". Overtype that to enter the name of the sender you're searching for and click on the search icon (or hit "enter").  It should bring up a list of everyone with that contact name.

I hope that helps.  Without being there to show you, it's hard to explain.  I would agree with others that it's not the most user-friendly search method, but it's the best we get with free AOL.

(If you simply enter a word, name, phrase, etc. in the search box without selecting from the drop-down menu, it defaults to a simple search.)

A lot of us still use our old AOL's.  It's not like there was a reason to change.  AOL is my primrary, my first email and there's no reason for me not to use it.  Although I have a Gmail and a Comcast for junk stuff.

Re: AOL question

[ Edited ]

I started using and training with an inter-agency email system in our national organization of hospitals and clinics 'way back in the mid-1980s,  but AOL was my first free internet mail provider in the 1990s so it's nostalgic for me as for many others.   "You've got mail" is an iconic announcement.😊   However, I haven't used their service for years -- I closed that account a long time ago...  can't even remember when.

I prefer Gmail these days, although I have several accounts for different uses with Outlook/Hotmail (and AT&T and Comcast because of my phone and internet service with them).

Anyone who thinks AOL is below average or "old school" might want to read the regularly-updated online reviews of free email providers.   AOL is usually in the top 2 or 3 and they still are very popular for very good reasons.    The one major complaint I hear is that their support can be weak and uneven — I have one very tech-savvy friend who had major problems and finally gave up trying to access her longstanding AOL account because the phone support representative insisted that she pay a considerable amount to have the problem researched.

For any free email service it's a really good idea to keep up with the changes to the software and also check to be sure you know what kind of support they offer.    It's better to know how to get help before you need help.😊   In some cases, the user forums are wonderful resources when problems or questions arise.
