Re: front load versus top load

I have the front load Whirlpool Duet and love it. It cleans very well. I have had no mold problem. I use very little detergent, about a tablespoon per load. The HE detergent cleans very well with the low water. I use Spray and Wash for items with stains and dirty white socks. I am amazed how well they come out. I l wipe the door gasket and leave the door open. I had a Maytag Bravos top load and it lasted only 4 years.

Re: front load versus top load

@crazything   I bought my Kenmore front load washer about 13 years ago... never have regretted it!   Works flawlessly....   I use it at least twice a week with big and small loads.  It really saves water with the super spin cycle that leaves the clothes really dry... much less drying time.  And it holds a lot of clothes at a time so I do less washes.

I keep the door a bit ajar always when not using it and pull out the detergent dispenser too.   Try to give it lots of air flow.  Once a month I do a bleach clean cycle that comes with the washer... it really swishes and cleans out the washer of any sediment, soap residue etc during that 40 minute cycle.

Never have had any smells or the like in all the years owning this washer.... would highly recommend Kenmore brand.

I love my top load washer dryer combo. Would not buy a front load because I would have to bend too much.I have a knee issue & a top load is easier on it.I do laundry several times a week.

@gtxI have the same washer and also love it.  Yes, a Tbsp. per load was recommended when we bought it-we were advised not to use the measuring cap that comes with laundry bottles.

Same with wiping the gasket and leaving the door ajar.

Our old top-loader also lasted 4 years and it would have cost almost the price of it to fix.

I also noticed that when the top loaders drain the soap sits on top of the clothes; so even when the rinse cycle finishes some soap is still settled on the clothes as the water drains, leaving residue on the clothes.

We have the same dryer from 17 years ago, also Whirlpool-just a basic one with 3 heat cycles but it's all we need.

No mold, no stink, just a well-functioning washer.

I bought new LG machines recently.  I have only had top loaders and prefer them, especially since friends who have front loaders say the rubber gaskets on the doors tend to stay damp and get mildewy so it's recommended to leave the door open.  I agree with the other poster about the depth of the newer machines.  It's a stretch on tiptoes to grab everything out.  One thing I didn't pay attention to in the store when selecting the washer was how long certain cycles run.  I do a lot of towels and was surprised that on this machine, the towel cycle is over an hour long.  If you use fabric softener, that's another button and takes even longer.  Best advice is to read up and pick what works for you.  Post back and let us know what you decided.  :-)

@BarbiHollywood - we bought a new LG washer and dryer two months ago.

Like you, I was really surprised about the depth of the washer.  We got the biggest one because the only other one they had looked too small.  And, as you said, you have to really reach to get to the bottom.  But I’m able to do it.

And, also like you, some of those washing cycles are really long and I was surprised by that.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Re: front load versus top load

I had a good quality top loader and dryer for 22 years before it started to have issues.  I replaced the washer and dryer with Miele products, which is German made.  I wanted the water efficiency of a front loader.  I noticed immediately that my husbands sports socks, white underwear and handkerchiefs were no longer dingy.  My set is now 14 years old and still going strong. (It is supposed to last 20 years.)  There are things I like about it and equally things I don't care for (ie., no independent spin cycle).

Before I make a major purchase I do a ton of research, luckily I have never had to make a rush purchase.

Re: front load versus top load

I had a front load Maytag washer but it didn't last long.  That was the most expensive washing machine I'd ever purchased, so it sort of turned me off front loaders.  I replaced it with a top loader and I'm happy with it.

Re: front load versus top load

i have both and prefer the top loader.

i dont like the "smells" that linger in a front loading machine. i try to keep the door ajar as much as possible.

Have to respond about front loader versus top loader.  My friend's front loader let go after many, many years so she had to buy a new washer.  She called a small business that she had dealt with before and said I need a new washer and fast.  She said what do you recommend.  Without hesitation he said a Speed Queen.  It's a top loader with an agitator (unlike the top loaders now without an agitator).  He told her all the pros about it and said you'll most likely never have to buy another washing machine in your life.  She said done.  They delivered it to her home that same afternoon (it is pricier than other machines, just so you know).  They set it up and showed her how to use it.  It doesn't have all those fancy buttons like other machines but it is an electronic display.  Fast forward to yesterday, when we had lunch at work.  My friend could NOT stop talking about this washing machine.  She is in love with it.  It is so QUIET that she doesn't even realize it's on.  It doesn't mangle her clothes like the front loader did.  Her clothes are so much cleaner.  She literally couldn't stop talking about.  You might want to check it out.  Have a good day!

i cannot stop talking about my speedqueen either. got a top loading washer and the matching dryer. did not want to do a front loader again.

i got the one with a 7 year warranty.

cleans beautifully and is super quiet. i can adjust the water level as i like and that is a big plus.

Why would you want to bend down just to load the washer. It’s bad enough that you have to bend over to remove clothes from the dryer.
