There are some shops now that buy your clothes. It makes it easy for them and you.

If you do want to use a consignment store, check with friends in your area if they shop at one and if the people are honest.

They have one of those here but it is for teens and young adults. Plato's Closet. Apparently you can even open a franchise of this chain. Who'd have thunk? My daughter "dragged" me in there once . . . I didn't like it . . . just too too too much stuff, especially racks and racks of jeans & tops . . . I didn't care for it but the 16-20 something crowd seems to think it is a great bargain . . . to which I say GREAT . . . especially IF it teaches them bargain hunting . . . all the brands the kids like and pay way too much for retail . . . although I prefer the department store clearance sales . . .

I've never taken them items but according to their website . . . the buyer reviews your items and gives you a "check" or cash ??? and after so many sales or purchases . . . they give you a coupon for 20% off your next purchase.

we have one of those here - and you are on the money about it!!! (i did not know they were a franchise) OMG - it was PACKED with exactly like you said with rows and rows of jeans! the store was so stuffed that i have not been back.

Two years ago I gave a former neighbor a 400.00 retail leather jacket that I'd worn maybe twice . . . just wasn't my style . . . I know they don't have a lot of money . . . and I figured it would fit her and I just had too many . . . imagine my SHOCK when she came over and I offered it to her and she said "what are you dying?". OMGosh. Last year I gave her son, who is 11 months younger than my son so he was 15 at the time, a very nice barely worn maybe twice suede leather "bomber" style jacket . . . and he said thanks I don't have a jacket/coat . . . just a hoodie . . . well at least he had the good manners & didn't ask IF I was dying!@!@!@! You never know what is going to come out of peoples mouths and apparently they don't either.

this is what my brother does! he is a clothes horse - every single closet in his home is filled and most of it still has the tags on it because he doesn't get around to wearing it! he had close to 100 pair of jeans a couple years ago when he started. he has my mom take it to his favorite store and he picks up a check.

I'm not quite as bad as your brother but yea I love buying new clothes . . .

I've always donated to Purple Heart, Goodwill, Salvation Army and Downtown Rescue Mission . . . but now that we've paid off the house . . . no longer tax deductible with the charity donation . . . but I will still donate . . . although right now I have about 10 long & short formal dresses listed on eBay . . . still have the tags on them . . . IF they don't sell after a couple of tries THEN I'll donate but figured at least I should try since Homecoming and Party season is coming up . . . as some are ones I bought my daughter that she never wore so I've quit buying clothes for her unless I have intention to return them right away IF she doesn't like or they don't fit.

are you sure about that Qwackertoo???{#emotions_dlg.laugh}Wink he doesn't think he is bad either.

yea that is exactly how he is!! he is single with no kids, has his own home and makes good money as VP of a bank so he can and does shop all he wants. i think it is just like you said - he just likes new clothes! because he takes such good care of his things even stuff he has worn is still in good shape.

i always donate our things to the local 4 C's chapter here.

I know. I just love wearing a new outfit . . . after I've worn it once then the "magic" is GONE. haha That said, I do shop sales . . . at least I've improved on that . . . before in my younger days I didn't shop sales . . . that was a bad mistake on my part, I try NOT to think of all the money I've wasted . . . it is a weird habit I developed a long time ago when I was single and one I haven't been able to completely break. Now my daughter, I guess she takes more after her Dad than me in that respect . . . IF we're out shopping and there are two things or three and she is trying to decide . . . me I'm like buy them ALL . . . where is she really weighs it and buys just ONE of them . . . thank goodness for her restraint . . . but I'm trying to change my clothes shopping behavior.

I brought several thousands worth of clothing into one and even though I checked to see if they were still there I was told they were. But I never found them When I tried to take them to court I found I wasn't the only one. And the attorney's fees were way more than I wanted to pay. I give all my clothes to friends and charities.

I have consigned clothing and childrens' toys. It all sold and for more than I thought it would. I did have to bring one dress back home once unsold but it was very very formal and there just wasn't the demand for that sort of thing.

Absolutely LOVE consignment stores...

when I was first starting in the business world, my best friend and I used to shop at one that was run by a Jewish women's organization (can't remember the name) - all of the very wealthy women in town donated to it - we "scored" so many gorgeous things!! We became friends with the manager and she told us that most of the clothes had been altered, so if we found a certain "consigner" whose clothes fit us, she would call what that person brought things in so we would have 'first dibs" - it was fab!!

I have consigned some clothing items to a couple of shops here but didn't get much out of it...what I have gotten good $$$ for is furniture and accessories that I consigned...a chandelier that I paid $350 for brand new sold for $150 and I got half of that - figured it was well worth it as it had hung in my former home for years...and four barstools that I paid $69 each for @ TJ Maxx were priced at $89 each and I got half of that - after using them for 6 or seven years - so I'd say it was a good return!!

I think some folks have unrealistically expectations re: what their "stuff" is really worth...unless it is a designer or couture name, used clothing just doesn't typically bring that much - that being said, the best finds are often at the charity shops, especially the ones run by hospitals...or the more "upscale consignment shops" - I actually bought a fur lined raincoat at a consignment shop years ago for $150 that was gorgeous - almost bought a fox fur jacket there too - I think it was $300...I love to score a deal!!!

The shop I. Take my things to has a whole list of name brands they will not take and the major Q names are on it. No SG, D&C or QF. There are some of the other Q brands too but I only remember those.

I have shopped a few high end ones and found some lovely things.

When I tried to sell some garments, it was anything but a positive experience. Amazing how items just seem to disappear into thin air.
