Re: Why So Many Masks On Sale?

[ Edited ]

@Tinkrbl44 ...If you read my posts you would see that I ALWAYS wear a mask. - I do my best to follow the rules. (even tho mask wearing is not a law).

Recently we were made aware that we should be double and maybe triple up on the masks...I am not doing that...and now if you come into the country by foot - you most likely ARE NOT tested...how ridiculous is that??

If we have all been doing our best to keep the virus at bay and then we let people from the southern border come into the country with heavens knows what they are bringing with them...that is just plain stupid....

@santorini

Really? Come to Florida. I’ve been back in the office since May.

I've never not been in the office.

After the SB last night, I was watching a news program and there was an infectious disease doctor on.  He indicated that even if every single person in the US was vaccinated, it would not stop Covid due to people coming into the US from other countries, commerce between the US and other countries, etc.

He said this is something we are going to have to live with but hopefully it can be managed because it's not going to be eliminated.

Dr. Fauci has said more than once one of the reasons the US needs to ramp up vaccinating people so quickly is to get people vaccinated before there are too many variants.

And let's face it.  If this vaccine only lasts 5 months or so, how many people are going to get vaccinated every 5 months, 2 times?  It's not going to happen.

@Lipstickdiva  Regarding your last paragraph, the vaccines will keep getting better and better. Johnson & Johnson already has a one-shot vax. The current vaccines are the initial rush jobs.  Therefore I disagree with your last paragraph.

@Pearlee , you or I have no idea what will happen with the vaccines.  As of right now, which is all we can speak to, we have the vaccines that we have and there are a lot of unknowns.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine isn't even approved for emergency use yet.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that I read thatone strain may be more lethal. I think it was the South African one, but don't quote me on that. But certainly, I have not heard anything about their being less so. @Tessa Mendoza

@suzyQ3 , @Lils Mom,  there are a number of reports out there indicating that the 3 variants from the UK, Brazil and South Africa are much more easily transmittable but there is no evidence they cause a more severe infection/are more deadly.

I have also heard this reported on various news programs over and over again.  But then the doctor always goes on to say that by nature if more people get it, more will need to be hospitalized and more people will die.  I don't get how they keep making that leap.

@Lipstickdiva  I know it isn't approved yet but does show the development of the vaccines. I can see that once you have made your point you won't concede an inch.

No, I didn't read "all" your posts, but took what you said at face value.   It was your post, so I assume you meant what you said.

People coming in may not be tested, but from what I've read, they have to produce evidence of a recent negative test.   Like I said, if you don't want to wear a mask in stores. for instance, just stay home.

Assuming that all the current strains are no more or no less lethal, then you are left with more people getting the virus because it is so much more contagious. The more people who get sick, the more people will need need to be hospitalized and more will die. @Lipstickdiva

Re: Why So Many Masks On Sale?

My guess is that now there is an over supply, and the end of wearing them is near for some places, and many people.

Regardless of what is mandated, I believe that come summer, a significant number of people are going to stop wearing them. It's been a year, and people are over it. The studies conflict about the real effectiveness of them, and now that we are being told to double and even triple mask, people are just about done with it.

The companies have a certain window of time to get rid of all they have made, short of the virus new strains becoming more dangerous or not effected by the vaccine.

@suzyQ3 Not true at all.  Something CAN be more easily transmitted and not as lethal.  I presume you are thinking if more people can get it easier it would be more deadly.  That is not true.  If the strain is in fact LESS lethal to begin with how could it be MORE lethal just because it spreads faster?  The one we have now is 99% survivable for a vast majority and is considered highly transmittable.   And survivable means you can get it and live.  The number of people who get it is irrelevent.  That's like the number of "positives".   The number doesn't count.  It seriously doesn't   You have multiple tests given every day,   False positives, people still positive trying to see if they can come off of quanantine.  You have people who are asymptomatic that just get tested because they were near someone who was 'positive".  100 people could get this new strain and if it is less lethal then less of those people will die.  Doesn't matter that they ALL got it.  If the strain is less deadly, it's less deadly.  How can it be more deadly if it wasn't to begin with?  That makes no sense.  Transmission only becomes a factor for those at high risk.  But if the strain is less potent  than the risk is lower for severe symptoms.  So even if it is more easily transmitted, you are less likely to suffer severe symptoms.

@eadu4

Just a heads up, not meant to offend....

There is one strain. You are talking about your opinion of the new mutations to that strain - the mutations are variants. Strains and variants are very different. Check it out so you can make your points using the correct terminology - even though half the media uses the words interchangeably they are not. You don’t want to sound as ignorant as they do.

@Mom2Dogs, the news that I read and hear includes the information that cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are decidedly fewer.

But they have duty to tell us that they are still much higher than they should be. And they have a duty to warn us about the variants.

So what I hear seems to be the facts. And I appreciate that.

@suzyQ3

They recently changed how they count so the numbers have been skewed yet again. We aren’t going to get true numbers about this. It has been tampered with in too many ways too many times in too many places. No one knows the “real” numbers.

I really don’t think the numbers should change our behavior until they hit the ground and stay there. It isn’t likely to happen for a long time but, hopefully, it will happen before a new, deadlier strain (strain is not the same as a mutation/variant) comes along for the next pandemic.

I’m in Florida and I have never heard anyone in real life say to double mask though, depending on the mask and the situation, it can be a good idea. Safer is better than not safe at all.

Most of my co-workers don’t wear masks at all and the rest are inconsistent which isn’t much better. I can only think of one other person at work who consistently wears a mask around other people there. I am very happy I can close my office door and avoid them all.
