Re: What 'modern conveniences' do you live without?

I do without many things. Living in an apartment, I even do w/o a house!

But Ive just finished up an extremely long, hard week and need to think of reasons to smile instead...

Boy, I agree.   When I read the original post I thought it was a joke.  I've lived without these items but I prefer to have them.  Could I do without them, yes and I have when we lived in Greece in the mid 90's, but I'd rather have them and I too look forward to what is coming next.

No TV in Bedroom ever in my entire life

No Landline Phone - cell only

I do have some kind of ipad thingy that my husband bought (told me got free) plus come to find out he is paying for every month. I never wanted one and have never figured out how to use the dang thing.

NONE. Modern conveniences make life easier, IMO.

The hubs and I drive cars from 2000 and 2006. We live without---icemaker, DVR, the I's (phone, pod and pad), microwave, garbage disposal, laptop, and GPS> My coffeemaker is pretty ritzy--coffee, espresso, cappucino maker from 1994. I love that machine and treat it like a baby--lol.

Oh yeah! I forgot I didn't have a garbage disposal, just a compost pile.

I can say I'm glad I was not around until they had AC. When we got married the house we rented did not have central heat & air so we had to buy a window air conditioner. We had no money, no credit so had to have his parents co-sign. They did not want to because they said it was a luxury & we did not need it. They did not think we could afford it. They co-signed & we have had excellent credit since. The house did not have a shower either. I told DH I wanted AC & a shower or I was going back home. LOL!!! I went home & took a shower every day until he got it installed.

@Nightowlz

Boy, I'm glad I started this, as people are bringing up things I had forgotten.

When I was growing up, we didn't have a shower either, until I was in about high school. It was always a bath, then washing hair in the laundry sink with an attachment put on the faucet that was a sprinkler head type thing! Thanks for that memory!

@MrsSweetieBear  I've never had a TV in the bedroom either...in fact, before I married, I didn't own a TV for about 10 years.  People thought that was the strangest thing!

@Mominohio  Our vehicle could use upgradin' but there's a few good years left in 'er and she doubles as a plow (kidding!)...

I sometimes shake my head when I think of all the things we have today that we consider 'necessary'. I think back to what my great grandparents had available to them, when they married in about 1905, and compare that with all we have in conveniences (or some people consider necessities) today.

Some of the things we don't have and never miss.

Ice maker in the fridge (no water or ice in the door either)

Dishwasher

Texting or internet on the cell phones

No 'i' anything. No ipad or iphone or ipod

Air conditioning in the house (and never had it in the car until my son was born in 1996)

DVR or any other way to record television

I'm sure there is more that other's responses will make me remember.

What things considered modern conveniences or modern necessities do you live without (either by choice or for financial reasons)?

@Mominohio

I really doubt many would call that era "the good old days" .... if you wish to do without some of the enhancements of modern life, that's great, but it hardly gives anyone brownie points.

Living in Southern California, I rely on Air conditioning, my Microwave oven (to keep the kitchen cool) and my DVR.

What do I feel I don't need?    A smart phone, since my laptop goes everywhere with me, and the ice maker in the fridge door.   Don't need them, but I reserve the right to change my mind at any time .... lol.

I didn't start this thread for 'brownie points' or to make any judgements about the new being bad and the old being good. I simply am amazed at all we now have at our everyday disposal that people just a couple of generations ago didn't have, couldn't imagine, and labored hard without.

But I have tremendously enjoyed the fact that most people have had fun with this, and brought back some really fun memories.

Nor is it more noble to look down one's nose at those that simply discuss the things people consider 'necessities' at this time, but certainly aren't, and choose to live without for whatever reason.

Don't assume that just because people don't find value in paying for/using  many modern conveniences doesn't mean they aren't forward looking.

I agree with you both. I'm not going to deny myself comforts and conveniences 'just because'... but neither am I going to jump on every innovation because it's there... I don't see myself as noble for embracing certain technology, nor do I feel virtuous for 'toughing it out' when I don't have to... I have no desire to go without air conditioning, a dishwasher or a garbage disposal. At the same time, I could care less about ice makers or having cold water and crushed ice at the refrigerator door... well, for however long those gadgets work without needing costly repairs, anyway...
