Don't use fabric softener,
use washable towels instead of paper towels,
make my own deodorant,
and gave away my iron/ironing board.
Do these count?

We don't have a device to recoprd TV shows - here in our summer camp we don't have a dishwasher or ice maker, or a washer/dryer --I go to the laundromat to do the laundry. WE also don't have a dvd or cd player here but at home we have those.

Absolutely not being argumentative, but do any of those responding think that many of the 'modern' conveniences, while making life easier, at the same time make it more complicated?
I do. First they all cost money, and many of them constant money for service access or to maintain/upgrade. That means having to spend more time, to make more money to pay for things to save us time. Sometimes kind of a vicious cycle?
They used to be invented to save us time or hard work (like the automatic washing machine) but now, many of them redirect our time and energy to areas that aren't as rewarding as other things done in the past, like cell phones today, and people on them nonstop to the point they aren't communicating at the same dinner table.
As in most things in life, they come with the good side and the not so good side.

Nor is it more noble to look down one's nose at those that simply discuss the things people consider 'necessities' at this time, but certainly aren't, and choose to live without for whatever reason.
Don't assume that just because people don't find value in paying for/using many modern conveniences doesn't mean they aren't forward looking.
I agree with you both. I'm not going to deny myself comforts and conveniences 'just because'... but neither am I going to jump on every innovation because it's there... I don't see myself as noble for embracing certain technology, nor do I feel virtuous for 'toughing it out' when I don't have to... I have no desire to go without air conditioning, a dishwasher or a garbage disposal. At the same time, I could care less about ice makers or having cold water and crushed ice at the refrigerator door... well, for however long those gadgets work without needing costly repairs, anyway...
Balance in life is always good.
Embrace the new, respect and know the old, and one will be most blessed.

There are cars made today without A/C. We purchased a Jeep two weeks ago and there were plenty of models that came with no A/C. The last car we purchased without A/C was in 1983.

I don't use a dishwasher (although we do have one). DH insists they don't clean well enough.

We don't have tv.

The average life expectancy in 1905 was 47 years old. I like my odds better today.
To answer the question, I have most all the modern conveniences and life would be less comfortable without them.
