I AM a fan of painted brick, and am also a fan of standing out - sometimes even in what some might call a bad way.
Anything but cookie-cutter! JMHO.
@sabatini I agree!! You should see my house. It's the only one of its kind in my town. I could never post a picture because it's so recognizable to people in the area.
Anti-cookie-cutter-homes unite!!!!

Dear Whatnow,
We have lived in two HOA gated places and my hope is that they will have the "painters" restore their home to natural brick. Both of our homes mentioned are/were in Arizona but different states may have completly different rules. Please let us know how this turns out.
Thank you,
Cathy

We lived in a two story traditional home, all brick. When we bought it, it was painted gray with white shutters. We turned around in a few years and had it painted a warm taupe with black shutters.
Use a good exterior paint - we used Benjamin Moore. And, use a good painter with good references.
Our paint job looked just as good when we moved (and, that was SEVERAL years) as when we had it painted, no fading, no peeling, no complaints.

@ROMARY wrote:I like the brick and/or old brick look. I don't recommend painting the exterior just before selling, or at all, for that matter. However, if someone has a brick fireplace/interior wall inside a house that they just can't stand anymore, just use white chalk and slightly color each brick in certain spots, then take a brush and brush the brick(s) smooth. It lightens the brick wall/fireplce quite a bit, and it has that 'old brick' look. And, if one doesn't like it, just remove it with a chalkboard eraser. I suggest dust-free chalk, btw.
What a great idea! i can't wait to try it, seriously!! Wish I could get started this minute.
