On 5/19/2014 ive been framed said:I also hated lugging laundry to the mat. I had to do this when I lived in Pittsburgh, and didn't have a car. UGH! Had to take a bus or streetcar. In the winter months my laundry wouldn't be completely dry and would freeze (didn't trust those over-heated dryers) and everything would be all wrinkled. I did hand-wash my 'unmentionables' at home!
After getting my own washer and dryer, I will NEVER complain about doing the laundry and actually enjoy it! We do take heavy blankets and quilts to a laundro-mat these days, 'tho.
Wow! Yours is the worst laundromat story I've ever heard-----other than my own! I,too, didn't have a car and had to wheel a baby buggy full of clothes for 8 blocks through all kinds of weather including lots of snow. (Minnesota). It occasionally also held the baby! This is how I grocery shopped too!

When DS and I moved to FL for his year at Career school, we had to use the apt's laundry room that serviced 70 apartments - there were only 4 washers (2 that never worked) and 4 dryers. I had to get a 'refillable card' from the leasing office and use a machine that took $5 increments. I had to "reload" the card constantly, since the laundromat machines did not work (yet they ate my $$). Two months later, there was a murder at McDonalds (50 feet from our unit), we notified the leasing office and we arranged to move to the other side of the apartment complex - in our new apartment we gained a much larger kitchen, a dining room and a washer/dryer. It was only ten dollars more/month, utilities included -- I was a Happy Camper!
I've always loathed laundromats but if I need to wash ove-rsized bedspreads, I have to use them.

Just driving by.........(all of the varied scented laundry detergents/dryer sheets)........the entire area is polluted with chemicals/scents/etc. We have to roll up our windows.

I consider a laundromat a necessary evil. However the operative word is 'necessary'.
Actually, I don't really mind it all that much.

I agree with you Lavinia. I have to use one. It's a bit boring and something one has to make time for, but other than that, no big deal.

I used one for years in New York City and every time I do a laundry in my little house now, I am so grateful for the convenience.
The laundromat dryer temps were so molten that they probably killed any germs--but they also very much shortened the life of fabrics.
My sister's house is right on the water in Maine and her septic system is temperamental, so she uses the laundromat. But in summer on sunny days she brings the clothes home wet and dries them on the line. The sunshine kills germs, too.

I used to love getting everything washed at the same time. Plus I got some reading done.
