Re: What Now-Defunct Local Stores Do You Miss?

I miss the stores they called "" 5 & Dime "" stores. Like Woolworth's. You could find the greatest variety of things & some even had pretty good lunch counters oddly enuf.

I miss Service Merchandise, they were a home shopping channel in brick & mortar form. (minus shoes, clothing, & makeup/skincare) They had the most beautiful jewelry & their prices were 50% or more off of retail. They also had great sales, with an 8 month layaway on any jewelry over a certain dollar amount. My mom used to get all her jewelry there, so did I.

I also miss Filene's Basement. I didn't go often but when I did, I usually walked out with quite a bit.

I still miss Marshall Field's ... no other store like it before or since.

Me too!! When I saw Frango Mints with Macy's name all over the package, I refused to ever buy them again......just isn't right not having the real Marshall Field's!!!

That would change the experience.Although there are defunct stores I'd patronize if they still existed there are none I can honestly say I truly miss. The people who manned those stores made them - and they certainly would be long gone even if the stores still existed.

I see all my favorite NJ stores have been posted already.

When I use to visit my sister in Houston, my favorite store was Sakowitz. It was a truly elegant, free standing store, not far (I believe) from the Galleria. Their catalogs were the best and everything was delivered beautifully packaged in a quality gift box.

I miss Linens & Things. I would use my Amex points to get their gift cards. I still have a lot of things from there that cost me practically nothing. I'm in S Fl and miss "The Florida Store", Burdines.

Rickels and Pergament....both Home Depot type stores.

Did anyone have a Grant's?

Lotus we had a local Grant's when we bought our house. I bought a "Lady Vanity" electric mixer in Grant's right around 1973. Last year it finally cracked in half. That was 40 years later! They also sold Vornado small appliances, which lasted forever. I would love to have another Grant's type store around.

I loved Grants. The one near us had a fabulous window covering department and such variety!

In northern NJ, Bamberger' s. My grandmother would take me shopping for school clothes there, and then we always had a hamburger and Apple pie for lunch in their restaurant.

Epstein' s was another dept. Store I remember in NJ.

When I got older (17), my friends and i would drive to Rockaway Mall. One of our favorite stores was Hahne' s.

i shopped at Bambergers! Do you remember Alexander's?

What about Klein's and Korvettes?

I miss B'Altmans and Gimbles

I'd forgotten about Klein's and Korvettes. I liked Klein's which was along the lines of a GC Murphy or Woolco... Korvettes around here was fairly junky and I don't miss that one so much!
