Re: What Now-Defunct Local Stores Do You Miss?

Would you believe that Nordstrom, a local family owned store only in Seattle, was once a building that housed and sold nothing but shoes? Next to it was Best, the clothing store. Eventually, they merged to become Nordstrom-Best. They had branches around the Puget Sound, but weren't national at all. Now it's just Nordstrom, and it is EVERYWHERE. So many changes since I was a kid visiting Seattle.

This store is regional to the Shrewsbury/Worcester area of Massachusetts. The store was Spags. They gave not bags but they had interesting wonderful deals. For instance there would be a box of shoes, etc. So many people loved going to that store. They came from all over. Even New Hampshire.

Before the malls went in we had a store called Bowman's Department Store in a small city near us. They sold mainly men's and women's apparel that was excellent quality and made in the USA.

In northern NJ, Bamberger' s. My grandmother would take me shopping for school clothes there, and then we always had a hamburger and Apple pie for lunch in their restaurant.

Epstein' s was another dept. Store I remember in NJ.

When I got older (17), my friends and i would drive to Rockaway Mall. One of our favorite stores was Hahne' s.

i shopped at Bambergers! Do you remember Alexander's?

Lotus we had a local Grant's when we bought our house. I bought a "Lady Vanity" electric mixer in Grant's right around 1973. Last year it finally cracked in half. That was 40 years later! They also sold Vornado small appliances, which lasted forever. I would love to have another Grant's type store around.
