You wanna have heart failure you should read what one has to eat on the Ketogenic diet! Almost 100 percent fat with just enough protein thrown in for life and a teeny tiny amount of carb. You have to drink whip cream with every meal or substitute something with an exact ratio of fat to carb like Macadamia nuts.

And use those ketostix and make sure they come up purple? My friend has a son with epilepsy and she had to adhere to that diet for him throughout his entire childhood. He is doing well now and whether it was from the diet, she said she hopes so because it was a rough ride for them....

Yup. Is he still on the diet? My dd was able to get off after four years. It will cure or nearly cure some epilepsies. But it is VERY difficult and yes you have to have those keto sticks turn dark. DD's were often black. THe school nurse about had a heart attack! It's hard for people to understand that ketones in the urine are good in this case!

The ketones are from ingesting the high concentrations of fat and almost no carb.

Is this like the PKU diet?

Is that the one for phenylketonurics?

No, this is a diet for epilepsy. It was used in a somewhat different form before the advent of drugs like dilantin and phenobarbital. But in the 90's Johns Hopkins hospital brought it back because a lot of kids were not helped by the drugs. You weigh the food on a gram scale with a predetermined ratio mathmatically arrived at according to height, weight, amount of calories they want you to have. On a 4 to 1 ratio that means 4 grams of fat to 1 gram of combined carb and protein. It is basically a diet to trick your body into thinking you are starving and then the body releases substances that stop seizures. Last I heard they still don't know exactly why it works but it does. It can be a miracle cure.

Yes, it is.

I'm so sorry about your daughter and Serenity's friend's child. I am glad that it has helped. It must have been so hard for you and her. When your child is ill, there is nothing more important than getting them well.

based on what some people here state they eat, I doubt they are the paragons of virtue of good healthy eating.

Some troll posts a study that anyone who has followed healthy eating already knows about and you all jump on it like it is new news.

Americans ARE fat, obese - and it is because of our unhealthy diet of too much greasy, larded up sugary carbs. Good for you that you eat well. You aren't the norm in America.

Aw you sound like you are jealous.{#emotions_dlg.crying}

I don't know how she keeps from getting banned with her constant nasty pronouncements.

obviously Silver Lotus HAS been banned hence the multiple nics.

I would like to think as we're getting older, we're making better choices when it comes to food.

I'm not a "sweets" person but I do love salty foods. I've had to cut these to a bare minimum. I don't buy buy high fat, sodium, white flour, or sugary foods home. If I have a hankering for chips, I buy a small bag and eat them out. My family (excluding me) LOVES ice cream but if they want it, they have to eat that out of the home too.

My family are avid water drinkers and that's a good thing.

We eat as natural and organic as possible - butter and olive oil in moderation.

Thank you Melania. Yes Johns-Hopkins is an amazing place. Do you remember the movie "Airplane"? Directed by Jim Abrahams? Well his son, Charlie was one of the first put back on the re-instated diet plan. Abrahams later made the movie "First Do No Harm" starring Meryl Streep. Now the Charlie Foundation is the leader on the diet etc. I am still fascinated with the whole process even though thankfully we no longer have to do it!
