Jon Stewart was very funny...reminded everyone that the Weather Channel is based in Atlanta!

Yes, it was hard to believe under 3 inches of snow could cause such a problem. BUT when you add ice to the equation, that's a whole different ballgame. In addition, according to the news tonight, the roads were pre-treated but it wasn't done with enough time to allow that mixture to dry, so it didn't work.

Here in PA when ice is in the forecast, schools cancel. Back in December they cancelled and the storm took a different track and missed us altogether. You'd have thought someone committed a heinous crime as school officials caught a major ration of you-know-what for that mistake. Yet, if they'd not have cancelled and ice had come, folks would've been equally mad. You can't win for tryin'. People live for the opportunity to blast our local school officials here.

Yep, I feel for the Superintendents, they are danged if they do and danged if they don't when it comes to making decisions on closing. Somebody is ALWAYS going to give them grief when they get it wrong. We've lost our weather days . . . maybe it is time to add them back in and then when it comes time to use them out of an abundance of caution, then so be it . . . and IF we don't need them . . . then 3 day weekends in April or May to use them up. Smiley Happy

Qwackertoo, our district builds several days into the school calendar for weather or any type of emergency. If they're not used, schools dismiss for summer vacation a little earlier. I think it's been a good solution.

And yes, you're right...superintendents can't please everyone all the time.

Didn't we have that same problem here in Atlanta in 2010 or around that time? The schools were closed for a week. We would never be prepared. The weird thing is I was looking for a snowplow to clean our streets then I realized I don't live in New York and New Jersey any more.

Wish I had a shovel to clear my driveway. Home Depot is my next stop when it all clears up. Guess I was not prepared.

That was Snowpocalypse 2011. We normally stay home on the weekends to avoid the traffic, and sure enough, it snowed like crazy on Sunday night. We weren't able to get out until Friday, and even then there was still ice on the roads.

My dad always made fun of me making sure that he had two gallons of milk on hand, a fair amount of his bread and other things like toilet paper, and it worked out beautifully even with a big case of cabin fever.

Universal Masking in Hospitals in the Covid-19 Era

“We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection.

We're out of make up days and salt stuff for the roads. Thank goodness a 30 degree warm up is due tomorrow.

Our street was a very thick sheet of ice. The road leading to our neighborhood was still very icy in spots yesterday.

I don't care for snow and ice -- and love living in the Atlanta area since it happens rarely here. When it does it is usually gone in a day or two. This last event was a little odd since it started earlier than predicted and the most of it was about 40 to 50 miles more north that predicted.

I feel the school systems were idiots in not calling it sooner. A friend told me that they had already burned their ""extra"" days and were trying to keep from having school have to go into June. I guess they don't even consider making the kids go for at least one or more of their spring break. Growing up in VA I remember many times we would lose our spring break to make up for snow days. One year we even went on a few Saturdays.

Hey you, get off of my cloud...

I live in SE Michigan and we've had issues with snow removal and a complete airport fiasco during a storm; now you would think we could handle it, but things happen. I've learned to not depend on the weather forecasters - they are frequently totally off the mark. They'll tout an approaching storm every 5 minutes for days and people just tune them out, if the storms goes north or south of us they actually sound disappointed. It's weather, nothing you can do about it. If it's not safe for your travel, don't. I have a Yukon that handles beautifully in heavy snow but there is nothing that would get me out on ice (except ice golf which I am trying in a couple of weeks!) . . . Be careful out there
