@CalminHeart    Just wait until you have to go to the shipping dock and unload the truck with your merchandise.

I don't think our local Super Center has anything but self checkout and I hear this is nation-wide.  I haven't been in the store for over 3 years, as I use grocery pick-up.

I use grocery pick up or delivery. That at least keeps a couple of people employed. Smiley Happy

Most stores have multiple self checkouts and have for many years now.

Walmart pays their employees very low wages, and they are known for very poor labor practices.

@Greeneyedlady21    Wal-Mart pays employees commiserate with their skills and experience.  They employ thousands who have little of either and who otherwise would have no job opportunities.

Can you cite an example of a poor labor practice?  Their employees are happy enough that the company has survived for years without unionization.

Government statistics show that about 14,500 WalMart employees receive government assistance. McDonalds has 8,700 on government assistance. With the profits both companies make, that's enough proof for me.

Absolutely, I thought self check outs were for people with 20 items or less.  Now People with a cart full of groceries have to scan their own items.  Now there are no express check outs.  I am shopping at Walmart less.  I rather go to a store where self check outs are for 20 items or less.  And a store who still have cashiers.Smiley Happy

I normally go grocery shopping once a month and the first place I go is Wal-Mart (then our Meijer).  My cart is pretty full so I don't use the self-check outs.  Since I go early in the morning, there is usually only one cashier working at a check out lane and it is the former Express Lane (12 items or less) so it's just a small counter and not the larger ones with the conveyor belt.  Why on earth, if you only have one check out lane available, do you only have the one with a small counter.  It's probably to help drive me to use a self check out lane but it's going to do the opposite and I'll quit shopping there completely.

@Ainhisg   I actually like to do grocery shopping. I would  never ask a stranger to pick out groceries for me as they have no idea how I shop, what I look for while I'm there. Some items I try to bargain shop for ie what's on sale when I happen to be there, what off-brand names of items I may be looking for. Some items are a must for brand names, others maybe not so much but again it depends on what I need at any given time. As well, a lower price or on-sale items that I may not even have on my list may go into my cart.

Meats & produce never would I trust a stranger to choose my fresh fruits, veggies, nor types of meats I may be looking for. I just cannot imagine doing this.

Good for you for trusting others to do your grocery shopping. This concept is not at all for me. I'm glad I can do this for myself. My husband enjoys shopping for groceries alone and with me. Yes he goes alone at times and does a great job of it too. If he does this it's usually because he's shoopping for certain items to create in the kitchen.

As well, good for corporate to keep these employees on the payroll and use them in other ways. However if I were one of these employees, to do someone else's grocery shopping would not be what I would want to do. If this would be my ONLY choice of (new) job just to stay at a Walmart for a paycheck, I'd have to really think about this offer. And please do not condemn me for being choosy about keeping my job or moving on to another job elsewhere.

@Lucky Dog   I detest people who do not know me yet think it's okay to call anybody - ME - sweeties, honey, darling, babe.

My husband is THE ONLY person who gets to say these loving words/titles to me.

The first time someone like this would start rattling off these expressions to me, I would very politely ask them to please stop as I am none of these things to you!!!

@Kachina624   I'm not 100% sure about rural areas and small towns with the only place to shop is Walmart. Can't say I agree with you at all on this one. No need to expound any further on this - you or me.

@PINKdogWOOD : did you mean to tag someone else instead of me?

@PINKdogWOOD    I didn't expect you to agree and really don't care if you dont.

By the way, I didn't say a word about shopping availability.  I did mention job opportunities Wal-Mart in small towns.

  • I love self checkout.  I use it at Walmart, Safeway, CVS & Dollar Tree. We are a small town but more & more are being installed.  There are rarely lines, my items are not double rang and they get in the sacks I want them in.
