In some states certain narcotics can't be done electronically or called in. For instance, oxycodone can not be called in, you must have a paper script but hydrocodone can be done electronically.
What I don't understand is I had hydrocodone done electronically when I called my obgyn for pain meds right before a procedure I was having done to help with fibroid tumors but last week I was diagnosed with pneumonia and was given a script for Tussionex (cough syrup which also contains hydrocodone) but that had to be a paper script. What is the difference?

My neurologist was furious about this law that went into effect Oct 6 on hydrocodone. He feels a doctor should be able to decide which patient should get what treatment. (He's not a pill pusher and in fact has caught a couple of doctor shoppers looking for pain pills.) At my last visit he gave me a script with refills and told me to fill it before Oct 6. When I went to Walgreen's, they told me they wouldn't be able to do any refills because of the new law. The clerk said he thought it was because they were a national chain and I might want to try a local store. So I went to a local pharmacy and they had no problem going by the law that allowed scripts written before Oct 6 to be refilled until April 8.
Shorty, as I read the DEA bulletin, I don't think you will have to get future scripts filled on the same day they are written. You will just need to get a new one to replace the one written before the law changed. The reason is that the doctors have to write them and report them in a different way. Hope this makes sense.

New law came in effect on the 6th. You can thank the DEA. I found this out last night ordering a refill for a family member. It has to be a new prescription written or called in each month.
It's not just CVS.

It's not CVS's fault.

UPDATE from the OP....
Sorry I took so long to get back. Spent the day straightening this out.
Thank you for all the replies! I appreciate it.
I got ahold of my Dr. who got ahold of CVS and let them know, and then my Dr. explained it to me.
Ok the law is on REFILLS ONLY. There will be no more refills on bottles that say refills of narcotic pain relievers. This does NOT apply to NEW hand written scripts. New scripts ARE to be filled even if theyre from a week or more ago.
SO the person at CVS was WRONG in not filling the script since it was NEW and NOT a refill on an old bottle, and they have been told about it.
Now I have switched my medicines to another pharmacy.
Not just because of this.
Because CVS has been messing up for the past year.
They miscounted my meds once (months ago), and when I told them they yelled and screamed at me in front of customers. I did not ask for more meds @ the time,. I was telling them about the month BEFORE meds so they were more careful in counting NEXT TIME. Also one time they gave me a higher milligram of a script then I take! I returned them immediately and CVS was embarrassed at the time but fixed it immediately.
So that's 2 strikes and now this one makes 3! So 3 strikes they're out!
I am done with CVS and their "they do nothing wrong treatment" when this is the 3rd time they messed up.
Thanks again!

This will inconvenience every legitimate user.
It will most likely do LITTLE to curb true abuse.

Showing someone your driver's license is signing your life away? They don't know who's cooking meth.
You are not just showing your driver's license, at least not in my state. The pharmacies have to turn the list over to the state. In theory, the state is comparing lists looking for frequent users. I doubt if that is happening.
Ok, fine - so perhaps I overstated it in my earlier post, but was trying to draw a parallel to what cold sufferers have been doing with for several years now. State tracking and inconvenience to those who are legitimately I'll because of others' criminal activities. It's frustrating for many.

Shorty, I don't know if this will work for your prescription for "narcotic pain reliever." However, when I need a new prescription I call my doctor's office and they will fax an order to CVS, my prescription provider. You could try calling your doctor's office to determine if this will work for you. Good luck.

What a waste of red tape and time. People who are in pain should get the medications they need without all the government nonsense. So what if some people overmedicate, who is it harming other than themselves? Instead they are forced to resort to street drugs which ends up filling the jails and costing taxpayers money that could be spent on something beneficial to all of us.

Sudafed is used to make meth and making meth is very dangerous, not only to those making it but to the surrounding neighborhood in that it can explode. Houses where meth has been are contaminated with chemical residue that will sicken anyone who moves into it. So, it's to everyone's benefit to prevent the making of meth whatever way possible.
