Re: Trying to find the Covid vaccine

As to things "getting better" in a week or so, I wonder - because first of all, the new leader already said he thinks it's better to vaccinate everyone once as fast as possible and NOT hold any back for second shots  because then more people will have SOME immunity.

I'm not sure how that will work if it becomes the policy.  And I think that may be what our County is planning by now opening up to 65+ (while acknowledging at the same time they don't have enough vaccine yet for all those in the 75+ group) - as they are NOT scheduling second shots when people get the first one.  They are telling people to "check back" to try to schedule the second shot when it's due.

I also read that the second shot needs to be given in a short timeframe - like a week or so - after the due date or it won't provide the 95% immunity - so scheduling IS an issue.

So what happens if people don't get the second shot?  This may be why we are being told that even AFTER people are vaccinated, we still have to stay locked down and wear masks - and that really nothing will change.

How much immunity does the first shot actually provide...and how long does it take to kick in? Anyone know?

Re: Trying to find the Covid vaccine

My county here in South Jersey got a total of 100 doses of the vaccine. We have a hospital with more than 100 employees and multiple nursing homes each with more than a hundred residents and staff. It's going to be a long time before any vaccine filters down to everyone else.

@gidgetgh   770 928 0133. They did ask what county I lived in. My friend who told me about the Cobb County drive through talked with a nurse last week I think on Friday. She said that they are working on a plan to contact everyone who received their shots to set up an appointment for the second shot.  Not sure how they will do this. They have out email address and phone #s and address.

@50Mickey - thanks so much.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Re: Trying to find the Covid vaccine

I am eligible in NJ but appointments are not available.  If I have survived this long, I can wait till things calm down.  I am not going to drive far or stand in long lines for hours. I personally would like to see the teachers get it first as schools need to re-open.  I feel so bad for the children being stuck learning remotely.  They are missing out on so much. There is no way they can accomodate the number of seniors in the area where I live. But, they will get it here; maybe not this week but I expect things to get much better in a few weeks.

Re: Trying to find the Covid vaccine

There are reports that people who had the first injection are getting Covid, one a nurse in Ca.   It could be she/he were incubating the disease already.  It takes two weeks to develop 50% immunity from the first injection.

im sorry everyone is desperate to get the vaccine but life won't be much different until 70% - 85% of the population get the vaccine.  I am not in agreement with releasing all the vaccine and delay the second dose.  50% immunity isn't going to help.  Wait, follow precautions and let's us get properly vaccinated.  Easy for politicians to say, they have their second doses reserved and some have received it already.  We don't need continuity of government as much as continuity of life, for the love of God.

Pfizer advised against detaining dose #2.

There is no plan after 1/20 that makes any sense.  Production has to speed up and I hope J&J gets EUA soon.  Government meddling in medicine never makes sense.

@Catch71 Bergen County here.  I've registered online at NJ.gov & the County, local hospitals, shop rite, Acme and my large medical group.  No vaccine in sight yet.  I don't know why the Gov opened up groups & mega sites but no vaccine?  As much as I'd like to see schools open, to vaccinate teachers first before high risk isn't too helpful.  Children can't get the vaccine.  A person who gets the vaccine is protected  but can carry covid to children.   I understand the newer strains are affecting younger people.

I don't think we should have to choose.  Manufacture enough vaccine in the first place before it's released.  I knew this would happen.  I will wait, observe precautions and will not drive 1.5 hrs away to get a vaccine which I might not get once I'm there anyway.  People are acting crazy....life isn't going to change until fall.  If I get my first, I'd like to have confidence the second dose is there.  I'd also like the J&J vaccine which is one injection and they claim 100% efficacy.

Re: Trying to find the Covid vaccine

I live in a senior building and anyone who signed up/filled out a consent form was given the first dose today, myself included.    I get the second dose on February 7.  I do hope that all who want to get it can get it.

@Stray

“They” got caught in their own lies. It appears there never was any vaccine being “held back.” The decision to release what doesn’t exist really messes with plans to use said non-existing vaccine.

BTW, there is only one strain; there are multiple variants because that are the result of mutation. Almost every time the word “strain” is used on the news, it is in error.

Life won’t change for the better by fall. Give it a year or three. If at all. Things are going to continue to get worse for a while.
