I have been reading about Oak Island for years and am fascinated by it.
I tried to watch The Curse of Oak Island, but it's too set up and too frustrating for me. The ads always make it sound like they're going to get answers NEXT WEEK, but they never do. When I do watch, I often fast forward through the middle. I really hope they find something or are at least heavily subsidized by the History channel because I really hate the idea that they're blowing through their savings on something people have been attempting and failing at for over 100 years.
I hope they solve the mystery for all of us!

If the old man is still alive, he might put an end to the missing treasure by revealing where it is located. The treasure could then be used to help out local charities and lives would not have to be lost.

That defeats the purpose of a treasure hunt. Treasure hunts are about adventure and include an element of danger. Buried treasure becomes legend, which it sounds like he was after, since he first came up with this when he thought he was dying of cancer and then buried it when he was elderly. It's his legacy and a legend he knew would live on beyond him.
It's too bad people have died, but no one made any of them go after a treasure.

Sounds like the land-locked version of the Bermuda Triangle
