Mostly what I see in.the checkout line at stores here are.People, Real Simple, Sunset, magazines like that. Also several recipe type ones. There are the Enquirer and another one, but they dint seem.to.be prominently displayed...they're kind of squished in above the conveyor belt.

Actually, corporations pay for product placement. Pay attention in the cereal aisle -- which cereals are eye-level? Same for ketchup -- notice brands at eye-level. Soups? Etc. Welcome to agri-business.
Your grocery store is way more orchestrated than you realize.
Hi ennui1,
I know about the "pay to place and where in retail business". Also know that with many corporations(chain stores)it is up to the #1 Store Manager to decide what sells best for his piece of the pie in retail. Many of the Corporate give flexibility to a Manager to decide what she/he thinks will move more product in each area of the country. Yes, there is a difference of who buys what in terms of areas of the country.
All of my wife's nieces and nephews grew up working in chain stores and her nephew was the Manager in one area for 10 years until he got his doctorate degree in music and now is in the education field of Arts. His store was in a smaller town in IA and though Corporate suggested to him where he might place certain items, it was up to his judgement as to the final "perfect spot" for certain items, regardless of Corporate payment.
I know all retail businesses that are of the "chain variety" are paid more by certain companies as to placement(eye level/certain aisles etc)but some Managers work with the Sales Rep of these Corporations as to the exact positioning of their particular item(s).
I even worked a few years when I quit high school in 2 Chain Retail stores that were multilevel all encompassing stores. They sold everything and the placement of what floor/where on the floor were even paid for way back when! I worked in "supply-delivery-pickup from floors and shipping" so pretty well rounded in all of these aspects of what retail of all products were even back in the '50's and 60's.
One thing I learned soon after having double digits in my age was "if you don't like something speak up". There are people that like to complain to people that can do nothing to solve their issues, and there are people like myself that feel "what's to lose by speaking up", except maybe someone saying no or more than likely giving a reason for certain things.
Sure helped me learn things and also got some things done that had I "been of the hush not complain variety" things would have remained the same. My biggest "claim to fame" was getting AT&T as my employer to implement Plant Wide No Smoking before I retired years ago. Had I not started the ball rolling who knows how many years that would have taken and how many lives might have been different because of this change?

There's nothing wrong with the human body and those kids aren't seeing anything they don't see in the streets, on tv or on the beaches. I admit, I ocassionally buy Star or The Enquirer. I'm a grown up, I know it's 90% lies and falsehoods but they can be fun to read. I like to look at the fashions. I think of them as comic books for adults. Fun but not to be taken seriously.

I'm not old, I'm the youngest 54 year old I know. But, I admit many of the "stars" in those magazines are people I've never seen in my life and never even heard of.....LOL

It's not even a blip on my radar. If I buy one, which is rarely, it's for entertainment only. I don't take what they say in those things as gospel.

LOL. Remember, age is a state of mind. I used to buy and read them weekly, now I don't know them either, guess they're the kids of the "stars" I used to read about.

I think they're amusing. I read the headlines and try to figure out how they've twisted the truth to get to those headlines.

Oh just place them next to Como's 1,000,000 NEW ways to excite him in bed. Honestly, just how many new things can they come up with year after year that hasn't been done already?

They don't bother me. I've been known to read one from time to time.
