I hated growing up in a small town. It was like a fishbowl and heaven forbid you have an idea that is different from anyone else.  It's still like that today....once you move away  that's it. I know several people who returned "home" to live and were shut out by everyone except their families.....these were single men and women. Strangers moving in have also said they are not fully accepted by the community.......per a county wide survey.

Just saw a raffle online today...........winners choice of cash prize or a gun.

My house was built with a front porch, but "all that is wrong with the world" seems to persist.

I remember sitting out after dark on the front porch listening to WABC on my transistor radio-Cousin Brucie, Herb Oscar Anderson and Dan Ingrahm. Also, the neighbor would come over and make homemade ice cream. I only have a stoop now, but also a deck.

Never had a house with a front porch. Neighbors who’ve had a front porch were the neighborhood snoopers, watching everyone else’s business. 🤣

@catter70 I listened to the same ones on my transistor radio sitting in my room.

Some of my happiest memories of the past 80 years were made on the front porches of my grandparents, great aunt, and great grandmother. They lived in a small town in Indiana where everyone sat outside after dinner. So sad that the porch swing has been replaced by technology.

I still have a front porch, and neighbors who come visit on it, and casual people who have moved in the neighborhood. It's a great place to meet and greet your neighbors. I don't have gossipy neigbors, everyone is super nice.

Ironically, we're going through the process now of getting permission from the city to put a porch on our (new build) home.

Almost all our neighbors have one, new homes, old bungalows and everything in between.

I didn't think I'd want one, but after enjoying our neighbors', it's a must.

So the check writing campaign begins, first to an architect, then a lawyer and then permits from the city.

Ours will be semi-private because of trees, a large crepe myrtle and I'll hang Boston ferns.

We have a large covered back deck, but in the early morning, the sun still hits it sideways and our front yard is shady at that time.

I have always loved porches.  When I was a teen my friends and I  gathered on our stoops as we called them, we lived in the city.  I dreamed of having a porch that wrapped around the house, front and sides!  I would fill it with outdoor furniture and spend my time relaxing and reading.  Decades later, I never had that porch I wanted!!!!

I still have close friends from grammar school.  We get together for lunch once a month and keep in touch .  When we get together we have conversations, laugh a lot and have fun.  I is like the days we hung out on our stoops!!!!  Stoops, porches, great places!

Nice memories of my great aunt's big back patio that had a big oak tree hanging over it for shade....we would always go there after dinner; she had a creek

at the back of her yard and the tiny frogs would hop all over the newspapers the grownups were reading, and my siblings and I would sway ourselves to sleep on her big metal glider with the flowered cushions...I can almost see them now..thanks for reminding me! Sometimes my aunt would bring out her ice cream maker to the patio  and we would take turns turning the handle....then she would pour in the fresh peaches from our back yard trees. Oh my goodness....nothing will ever taste better!
