I have a wonderful huge wrap-around front porch, a great back porch with deck, a porch on the second floor off the dressing room, and a small porch on the third floor tower.

My house is a big old Victorian, and porches were essential for air in hot summers. The breezes come tthough and cool everything down.

I do not use all my porches, but it is nice to know they are there.

We do not have air conditioning, and don't really need it.

When we first moved to our neighborhood, all the families had big parties and invited everyone.  Nowadays younger people seem very busy, and much more private, so we no longer have the same level of socializing.

I would say social media has had a negative impact on in-person contact more than the lack of porches.

Our street doesn't and has never socialized in the forty years we've been here. Nothing to do with social media. We have our friends from the years we worked and since retirement, a few still from old days of work. Our  best friends have passed away in their sixties. I have my siblings I am close to but one lives on the other side of the world and the other in New England.

@Tinkrbl44

Not much I can say about this picture other than it was never a part of my life. Not living in our own home until I was around 14 years old.

I have lived in 4 properties with my name on the deeds, 3 of which were after the deed to which I was added, for IRS reasons. None of them had a front porch even resembling this picture.

My 1st townhome had a huge front deck, which I did enjoy. It was built to my specs in 1978. My 2nd, built to my specs in 1980. A similar deck, but on the back side of it.

When I think back to my "good old days", having a front porch similar to this is not where my mind goes. Did/does it make a difference? I get the premise of this picture, but it is not something that was ever a part of my "good old days".

Front porch and sit and watch cars go by? No thanks. Back porch, sit with family or friends or just read a book. No cars there, just trees, trees and trees and grassy back yard.

@proudlyfromNJ   same here !  Love our back deck , very quiet , just woods .  When friends and family come to visit it's a perfect spot !

I'd love to have a (covered) front porch...

Even with my year-'round allergies, I'd sit outside (until the bugs started bothering me) and enjoy the view. Smiley Happy

Re: THE GOOD OLD DAYS?

I grew up until I was around 11 years old in an apartment building in Brooklyn.  My mother would sit outside in the front of the building in the summer afternoons with other women who lived there chatting.

Today I live on a cul de sac in the same house for over thirty years.  I'm not best friends with my neighbors but they are all great!  I have been to weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, graduation and block parties with my neighbors.

When my husband first got sick over ten years ago we neglected the yard a bit since he could no longer mow and we were afraid to spend the extra money on lawn service since we just didn't know where this illness along with costs were going to go.

One summer Sunday morning I went out to weed and my neighbor came over to help.  Before I knew it, neighbors from four other homes on my street came over to help.  In a few hours the lawn was cut & edged, trees trimmed and the flower beds were weeded.  I never expected that at all and I am forever grateful for the wonderful neighbors that I have!

We put on a screened in porch (not a 4 seasons room!). It overlooks the woods. It's so quiet. I love to go out there. We can sit out there till almost October but the rest of the year it's empty. We're getting ready to 'open 'er up any day now. Just when we thought it was safe to open it, cold weather comes. Then it's hot. Then it's cold. I think we're going to open it this week-end regardless. I'm tired of waiting and I'm not gettin' any younger!
