@CatsyCline wrote:i will never again bring a candle gift. i found and gifted a lovely artisan crafted candle with a wood wick. the hostess loudly declared she hates anything scented VANILLA!
it's just a luncheon. a bunch of sunflowers would be a welcome gift for me. a tea towel is a nice idea too.
persoanlly i like to bring wine, such as Cupcake Angel Food or pretty blush wine but that might be a no-no.
I agree with you. If you do not know the individual's taste it is easier to buy a generic gift. Many years ago I once brought a bottle of Kahlua liquor to a get together at a co-worker's house. The co-worker's husband said that they do not drink Kahlua liquor and that maybe I should take it with me when I left. So much for a simple thank you for a gift.

@CatsyCline How sad. I know I have received some not so great gifts over the years. But we're always taught to say a pleasant thank you, and to be thankful for any gift. How rude to say they hate everything vanilla. Very tacky. I wouldn't buy that person ANY gift EVER.
Reminds me of an office exchange one year. One employee didn't like their gift and put it in a common area and said "free". I was able to remove it, so the other person who gave it, wouldn't see her gift out there. Say thank you and put it in your next donation box. I'm so glad the other employee never saw her sign. Then I said, that's it for me. It was to be a fun lunch, and an hour of fun. Ruined the day. Just rude. I get it, we won't love every gift, but come on. It was to be a $20 grab bag, it wasn't an expensive gift.

@lynnie61 i was embarrassed as i had no idea of her scent preference. she was very young at the time, no filter and also an inlaw. i suspect her mother spoke to her. we no longer swap gifts.

@spent2much - sometimes I gift a book of stamps. We all need those. And include it in a thank you note. Have lots of fun!💗

Be careful if you choose to give a candle to someone...not everyone can burn them because of allergies or lung issues. Also, regarding tea towels - if you haven't noticed any in her kitchen, then she probably doesn't even use them (like me).
If she serves coffee, how about some packets of fresh, flavored ground coffee. If she or the pastor uses creamer, put some individual creamer pods of different flavors in a cute bag or basket. If she serves a pastry, how about a specialty jar of jam or jelly.

We have all received gifts we didn't like, even from people whose intention was to give something unwanted. No matter, it's never acceptable to publicly criticize the gift.

@spent2much Instead of a real candle how about a flameless one? No scent no problem. Instead of note cards (I rarely need or use them) a blank recipe book, an inspirational notebook, or just a pretty notebook/planner with a nice pen. If they drink coffee or tea a pretty coffee mug or tea cup. Does she have a pet? Think pet themed mug or water bottle.

Definitely a flameless candle!

So many of you mentioned a tea towel. What is the purpose of a tea towel?
PS: I ended up purchasing 2 small candles, each in a mason jar, and a Godiva chocolate bar. ![]()
