Re: 🤔 Stuffing or Dressing?

I answer to both Smiley Happy

There's a James Joyce story, "The Dead," in which someone says that only "vulgar people" use the word "stuffing,"  so I guess there is an Irish distinction as well.

Still, the idea of "stuffing" a bird makes more sense than "dressing" a bird.

I do always put some dressing in the cavity--it tastes better.  Most of it I cook apart for guests---these days most people like it better that way.

Re: 🤔 Stuffing or Dressing?

[ Edited ]

If I may share: I now buy Pettridge Farms cornbread stuffing when on sale to have it later in the year as well (keeps great) and I make a "Stuffing/Dressing Casserole" to eat as a main. I made it for myy brother and he went nuts for it so now Ive made it on multiple occassions. Its very versitle.

I use hot or sweet Italian sausage out of case (crumbled and cooked)

Sauteed onions

Chicken stock

Couple of eggs ( the other debatable subject eggs or no eggs added to Tday Stuffing 😊)

Dried cranberries

Kidney beans ( sometimes)

Frozen corn

Frozen green beans

PF cornbread stuffing

And follow directions on package for baking in oven.

You can use any veg and protein you want, Turkey etc.

Ive even used kale and spinach so that I dont feel so guilty!!!

I don't make this with all those ingredients for Tday just with sausage and cranberries but for other times....yum

Re: 🤔 Stuffing or Dressing?

We've always called it stuffing.....   My family originally settled  in New York... but I've lived in New Jersey most of my life.   I use my paternal grandmother's recipe for stuffing.  She came to this country from Italy .. so she knew nothing about Thanksgiving or stuffing turkeys.   She concocted her own recipe... which is so different from the traditional stuffing.    It takes a LOOONG time for me to prepare it but it is worth it.   Everyone loves it!!!

Re: 🤔 Stuffing or Dressing?

If it's inside the turkey, it's stuffing, if it is on the side, it is dressing is how I learned the definitions, but that may have changed, and it depends on where one is from, I suppose.

Re: 🤔 Stuffing or Dressing?

I'm originally from N.J. but moved to Ca. decades ago.  I was always taught that if it's stuffed in the bird it's called "stuffing" and if baked separately it's "dressing".  I make it the same way regardless of how it is cooked.  I prefer it baked separately - less calories and I like the consistency better.  Just a matter of preference I guess.

Re: 🤔 Stuffing or Dressing?

My mother, born and bred in New York City, called it stuffing.  I call it dressing.  I'm in Delaware on the cusp of the MDL.

Re: 🤔 Stuffing or Dressing?

I'm in Ohio. Born and raised.  We call it stuffing and it doesn't matter whether it's in the bird or not.

My family and DH's family always puts some inside the bird and then does an extra pan of it baked in the oven.  I really don't care for the stuffing that's been inside the turkey.  I only eat what's been cooked separately in the pan.
