This must be a regional thing. ( hanging coats up in a Dr. office)
I live in the NYC suburbs. I cannot think of any doctor or dentist office that does not have a coat rack or coat hooks. After reading this thread, I'll never use one again.
When I got a new car last year, I asked about a valet key and was told they were no longer available.

It wasn't until New Year's Day when he went looking for it and remembered he had left it in the car that he discovered it was gone.
He called the establishment he visited the evening before and spoke with the manager who then gave him the valet service owner's name and number. He talked to the owner and the owner told him that he could not take responsibility for the missing jacket. Asked DS for the name of the valet parker and, of course, my son didn't know it. The restaurant is reputable and upscale, family owned. So, it isn't in a sleazy part of town - quite the contrary.
Bottom line: it's gone forever.
Has this ever happened to you?
Not a jacket but I keep about $25 in the console in my car. Maybe it's a coincidence but after using valet parking, all the bills were gone. (I realized the next day)
I now notice signs stating the establishment is not responsible for items left in the car. It's a no win situation. Moving valuables to the trunk does no good when the establishment has your keys.
Most cars now days (at least all my cars in the last 15 years) have valet keys. They can not gain access to the glove compartment or trunk.

My doctor and dentists have coat racks in their office. Also neither of our cars have a valet key. Not sure why.

The 2011 model I traded in had a valet key. Both my husband and I have 2015 models and neither has a valet key.
I do not believe you can lock the glove compartments in our new cars. These are not entry level, economy cars.

Our new Toyota Avalon has a button inside the glove box which prevents the key fob from operating the trunk if you push it.

No, and I use valet parking all the time. I've never had any kind of problem.
It's a good idea to check your car thoroughly before driving away - walk all around and be sure there's no exterior damage, and then look inside too. Once you drive away, you're pretty much out of luck because any damage you find after that can be attributed to you. There's no way to prove that a jacket was in the car, and they have to protect themselves from claims like that, so they're probably not responsible for personal possessions. (Every valet is different, I guess, but that's pretty typical of all the ones I've ever used.)
It doesn't matter if the restaurant is upscale or not. Anything can happen anywhere.

His jacket is most likely gone forever. Good lesson though.
Thanks for posting this also. It is a good reminder for people like me who still believe the world is honest. I have never used valet parking, not because I wouldn't but because I never go to places that have it
Now if I ever do, I will remember
@gabstoomuch, I still believe the world is honest. I've said that before on these forums, and got jumped on for it, but I know what I see and what I experience in my day to day life, and I really do believe that.
And just to balance things out here a little, a few years ago I was driving in NYC with a friend. We were meeting other friends for tea, and were running late. I asked her to check my bag to be sure I had my glasses. Somehow, she took my wallet out and accidentally left it in the car. I'm very careful with things like that, but we were in a big hurry and I was distracted. The valet parked the car, and I didn't realize I didn't have my wallet until we were finished with tea and it was time to pay, hours later. My heart was in my throat, believe me! I raced to the parking garage, and my wallet was still in the car, exactly where it had been left. With money, credit cards, ID, everything, inside.
As I said in a previous post, I use valet parking all the time and have for many years, and that's the only story I have to tell. No bad stories. Just that one good one. :-)
(And no, I do not advise leaving a wallet - or anything of any value at all - in a car, out in the open or otherwise. It would have been a good lesson learned if my wallet had been taken. Common sense goes a long way.)

We have a single key that we use when valet parking.
Most of the time when we travel, we use our truck that has a camper shell.
The camper shell has special keys.
You should never give all your keys to a valet driver.
Most of the time, they are honest but if not, they have keys to your home.
On our single key, we have our name and the year, color of the truck.

one time we were out dancing and i set my small designer purse down by the wall where the DJs booth was. i always kept an eye on it as i was dancing. as the music changed and some were milling about and left the dance floor. some guys were in the way and a girl marched right over to my purse and picked it up and walked off with it! i had to scramble to get to her, but i got it right back from her, she already had it on her shoulder . i should have said something to management but it was a nightclub loud and packed to the gills.
this is the kind of thing where you live and learn
Never took off my jacket when I went out. I know good leather is a lure for theives. So be careful and try to keep the jacket on if you don't have another way to keep it safe.
