And some of us are still working. Since I’m spending more time at home, I’m noticing household items that need replacing more than usual. I’m spending less on entertainment and clothes so I don’t mind a few new purchases for my home.

I’ve had the same tired dinette set in my kitchen for years that we avoid using because it’s so uncomfortable. I replaced it with a counter height table and 4 padded stools. Now my family is more comfortable to gather to play cards in the evening.

You sound like a person with common sense who spends carefully. I think QVC and other sellers are trying to appeal to people's anxiety and desire to keep their personal space all up-to-date, whether or not they can afford it.

Re: Sometimes I get irritated

As someone who could probably lose her business from this mess I don't see why they shouldn't be showing this stuff. If people have the money to spend they should. If you have the ability to keep some of the economy moving have at it. I remember during the last recession celebrities saying they weren't spending because it looked bad. OMG spend away. You're just adding to the pain. I remember they canceled a big yearly party around here for this reason. Hello, people were counting on that business. Unreal.

I was laid off 3 times in 2 years between 2008 and 2010. I didn’t begrudge nice things for anyone in better financial circumstances than me. I can be empathetic to those who aren’t working right now, but I had an 8 day stretch a few weeks ago where I worked from 8 am til after midnight each of those days. I won’t feel guilty for buying a few treats after I get my bonus check.

You were laid off not you and much of the country. That's the difference here. Many people are without jobs now that is why some of the product selling is tone deaf. It's like some people are doing so well right now they can't see that so many are suffering greatly.

I have a dear friend who does not have a lot of discretionary funds, for a variety of reasons.  By her own admission, she never watches any of the shopping channels because it's too much temptation.

I do know there are people suffering greatly, but does that mean the Q should stop selling?  Of course not.

Well, there is another way to look at it. If someone were laid off and they suddenly needed a high ticket item to repair something in their home or to continue their job search or for their or their children's schooling (like a computer), QVC's Easy Payments could actually help them get it without taking out a ruinous loan or incurring credit card debt.

Unfortunately a lot of people are out of work but not everyone.  Those who are shopping help the economy.

@GoneButNotForgotten I agree those who are out of work are not a great target for those products.  Beyond absolute necessities I can't imagine what QVC could try to sell to that target.   There's not much of the thousands of dollars I've spent over the past 25+ years I would have purchased if I didn't have my job.

What do you want them to try to sell?

Re: Sometimes I get irritated

Many retired people haven't really had their income impacted....if those people can still spend, it's helpful to the economy that they are doing so.  As others have said, the Q exists to sell....if they don't they will go under.
And as @Porcelain said, easy pay can be really helpful if someone really needs something and can't come up with all the $ immediately.

My heart goes out to everyone whose income has tanked through this...a huge worry.  Though my retirement income is stable, my 401 has been affected.  I am spending more cautiously....and mostly on Amazon.  Since moving here a few years ago I'm still finding myself reaching for something and realizing I don't have it anymore.  I have a lot of food in my freezer now, and wanted to label the packages...,no black marker!  Amazon is an inexpensive go-to for me.

I hardly ever watch QVC for entertainment anymore.  Maybe once every couple weeks I will stop by for a few minutes....but not for any length of time.  Anyone whose income has been impacted, should definitely skip watching shopping channels til things get better!
