It seems some people view reactions in such extremes.  There is a huge gulf between being adequately prepared and living in hysteria.  I’m not shaking in terror and hiding in a closets, but we have a good supply of prescription meds, over-the-counter meds, food, disinfectants, and paper supplies.  And foodie for the darling kitty we just adopted.

We are elderly people who are conscious that we are not forty years old any more.  Went to an enjoyable party for our GD this weekend, and we will make decisions of where we go on an ongoing basis.

If anyone would like to belittle us for being prepared and careful with our health - well, that’s not my problem.

There's nothing wrong about being cautious having things on hand just in case....it could be for things like the regular flu or a bad cold or severe weather.....But the media is making some people hysterical!!!

Im so excited to hear you adopted a little kitty!!!  Give her a big hug from me...Cat Very Happy Heart

I'm happy to keep up with current facts that enhance my quality of life.  When I'm tired, I take some time to rest, relax, and refresh.

Re: So tired of gloom and doom

There is quite a bit of misinformation spread around.  For example, those who believe that "nothing was being done" are incorrect.  Of course, no response will satisfy everyone, but the U.S. has been steadily working on this, as the timeline will show:

January 29, 2020-   Formation of U.S. Coronavirus Task Force.  Members include:

Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of Nat'l Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at Nat'l Institutes of Health

Dr. Robert Redfield, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Alex Azar, Secretary of Dept. of Health and Human Services

among others.

January 31, 2020--   U.S. imposes mandatory quarantines (14 days) on Americans returning from Hubei Province, China.

January 31, 2020-  U.S. denies entry to U.S. to foreign nationals who had traveled to China within the previous two weeks.  First time in 50 years such a step had been taken.

Just those two steps were smart and sensible ways of trying to slow spread to U.S.

February 25, 2020-  NIH announces clinical trials for an antiviral drug started already at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.  This is very exciting that they could gear this up so expeditiously.  Top Israeli scientists are also reportedly working on a drug.

Of course, many, many more things have been and are being done.  It's good to check with the CDC and other official sources for info and updates.

Re: So tired of gloom and doom

Why do we need to hoard toilet paper? Is it made in China? Sounds goofy to me. The only thing I might stock up on is things that are reported to be in short supply in the future....vitamins, bandaids, Splenda, etc. I wish I could get extra refills of my prescription meds but I know that won’t happen due to insurance, etc.
what are you stocking up on?

Yes I had a woman cough right on me at the grocery store on Saturday. I was even trying to keep my distance to no avail. She made no attempt to cover her mouth or even turn her head. Don’t know who she was, but if I get sick, I am blaming her!

As with everything else today, I see a partisan divide on this issue.

Re: So tired of gloom and doom

I read our daily newspaper daily and watch the nightly news. I also check in often to a news website that I like.

I haven't seen hysteria or gloom and doom. I see news reports detailing the progress of the virus, what's being done or not done, and stories about how we are reacting.

Re: So tired of gloom and doom

Please do not get angry at strangers that cough, sneeze or anything else in front of you.  Not all that do this are sick with a cold, flu or virus.  Some of us have allergies, smoke, COPD or lung cancer.  We still get out in public even though we get dirty looks and nasty remarks.  We do our best to control our sneezes,  We try not to cough, but when your chest fills up, you have to bring it up.

We can't wear masks when needed because the warmth of our breath and the heat on our nose make runny noses and tears from our eyes worse.  But, we try.

You can't catch what we have, but we can catch what you are throwing our way.  Your condemnation, your disgust, your anger.  We take that home with us.  You make us feel like dirt when all we wanted was to get out and enjoy the life you are living.  You live it in fear, whereas we see it as a good sign that we felt good enough to get out of the house for a few hours.

While you are being safe from your fears, please be respectful of the others that are fighting theirs.

Re: So tired of gloom and doom

I am not seeking out crowds to mingle in...but I am also not hiding inside my home. Washing hands, covering face, and avoiding sick people is smart, not a sign of panic. I have a friend who had surgery today. I am not going over to the hospital and will wait til she is home to visit. I think not going to the hospital to visit is also smart, not panicky.

There are things I worry about, but the coronavirus is not one of them.
