Re: So . . . does it clog drains or not?

I am very well aware that it is not cool to flush and btw we don't live in the UK.

Just google and you will see that the answer to flush or not to flush is an overwhelming "No" by anyone who knows anything.

I did google it and I got a more balanced result (I particularly looked for UK opinions, since that is where I grew up). Some people flush, others don't. I still think it has a lot to do with where one grew up and the quality of the plumbing. Septic tank users are much more likely to say "eww, who flushes". I wasn't even aware of all the environmental concerns, never heard of those before.

What I find most interesting is that we all seem so unaware of "the other way to do it". As a flusher myself, I had no idea anyone wrapped them in TP and put them in the trash. We didn't even have a trash basket in the bathroom when I was a teenager. This was the first I heard, in my 50+ years, of "the other way to do it", and it seems those on the other side of the argument are equally as unaware. It's not often you find something so polarising, that you didn't even know existed before.

Just goes to show that we can argue just about anything here on Viewpoints!{#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Re: So . . . does it clog drains or not?

This is the info directly from my city's website (http://www.sandiego.gov/mwwd/general/plumbing.shtml):

Keeping your sewer lateral in good shape

  • Never pour cooking grease down the drain. Freeze it in a suitable non-recyclable container and dispose of it in the trash.
  • Recycle large amounts of residential cooking oil or grease by disposing of it at the Miramar Landfill Recycling Center.
  • If any cooking oil or grease gets in your drain, immediately flush the drain with cold water.
  • Never flush non-soluble objects down your toilet. This includes food, tampons, sanitary napkins, cleaning rags, diaper wipes, etc.
  • If you are having problems with roots infiltrating your sewer lateral, use one of the commercially available rooticides available at most home improvement stores.
  • If you have a property cleanout, flush your lateral through the cleanout using a high pressure hose at least once a year.
  • Be sure to use a licensed plumber when having your sewer lateral televised or repaired.

I cannot believe that there are those who are unaware of the proper way to dispose of tampons and pads since there are containers in public restrooms designed just for that.

Why would you waste water flushing Kleenex down the toilet? They can be thrown in the garbage

Our plumber told us not to do this unless we wanted to put him on our payroll. Today's tissue are thicker and treated with softeners like aloe. They do cause clogs just as many name brand toil*et papers do. Thick and soft may be good for the bum and nose but not your toil*et and wallet.
