Re: Significant History You Have Lived

The first thing I remember is the killing of JFK I was 8 years old, then of course 3 NY blackouts, several large blizzards, the murders of Dr King and Robert Kennedy The Son of Same era and lastly the pandemic and 2 weeks at the beginning when all services were closed down except take out and delivery  from restaurants

Re: Significant History You Have Lived

Tried to edit but could not so I will add it, The first WTC bombing while my husband was working at 6 WTc this was 30 years ago and 3 months before our wedding, he could not be reached for a few hours I was really scared, and I will conclude with 9-11 the worst day in American history and my life I was in the battery Tunnel when the first plane hit and standing on the street when the second plane hit,

JFK being elected President. I grew up in a politically aware family and decided I was for Kennedy. I was so excited when my mom woke me up and told me he won.

Re: Significant History You Have Lived

@I am still oxox - I'm about the same age as you, also from NY.

I think I was in 4th grade when JFK was shot.  We were all jammed into a classroom and a TV was brought in to watch it.  I know it was significant history, but at the time, I really didn't understand what was happening.

I remember the blackouts, especially that first one.  And Son of Sam.  I was into the "clubs" at that time.  Long dark hair (who didn't have it back then??).  I remember going to some clubs on a Friday night and the places would be empty because of this guy.

To me, 911 is still the worst thing to happen in my lifetime.  I can almost remember every detail of that day.  I worked for a large corporate company in Westchester and after the 2nd tower fell, my boss told me to go home.  I was terrified to leave the safety of the office as I had no idea what was going on out there.  I pray that nothing like that ever happens to us again.

Has anyone else given thought to how much history the posters on these boards have lived regardless of age?

The first significant event I remember is Sputnik.  I was young and don't really remember if I was impressed by Sputnik or my parent's, along with other adult family members reaction to it.

I do remember feeling bad for Able and Miss Baker but that was a couple of years later and I was more in tune with what was going on in the world.

So many significant events--some good, some not at all good--all life changing in some way.

I remember the Sunday morning WW11 started, my cousin and his friend, left to go home to sign up for the army. I was 7

Re: Significant History You Have Lived

First thing that popped into my head was the assassination of JFK. I was in junior high. It just sucked the breath out of me. And then I saw Jack Ruby kill Lee Harvey Oswald live on TV. It changed me.

The depression years. WW11 and all the other wars after.

Needless to say, all the other events mentioned.

Graduation from college at age 72 and getting a scholarship, and asked to give the commencement speech.

First man on the moon, etc.

I'm 62,  I'd have to write a book to answer that question.
