Regarding hosts ordering while on air, Lisa Robertson used that sales gimmick quite often.  When presenting something she would ask someone who was off-camera to please order one for her.  One time she was presenting a really ugly blazer that looked like it was made from burlap and asked someone to order it for her in all three colors.   What a joke.
