@lynnie61  wow I surely agree with that !   I've done both waitressing and worked retail and the stories I could tell !   Not always easy working with the public !   Although some nice people as well.   I feel because of waiting I always tip well .

@nascarfan   I get that we dislike stingy tippers .  We always tip generously ,  waiting tables is hard work and good service deserves a great tip .  We frequent this one particular restaurant,  very nice local place with only 2 wait staff ,  it's a small place .  Anyways we have gotten to know each waiter very well ,  service is beyond great !   We always included a more then usual 20% there.  At Christmas we give each a card with money plus our usual tip .  Good service deserves a good tip.  I feel if you can't afford the tip stay home !

Just for the record ............   I usually put my meals on a credit card, but ALWAYS leave cash for the wait-person and put nothing on the credit card bill, just drawing a line through it.

I think wait staff should always get their tips in CASH for obvious reasons.

Anyone else do that?

I think it's tacky when that's the first thing someone mentions when the server arrives. Like geez, are you afraid we'll expect you to pay for us? lol

I don't really care if you want to get separate checks, but don't mention it right off the bat or it comes across as cheap.

I never thought of that! I leave the tip in cash, too, and always feel weird that they think I'm not planning on tipping.  Thanks for the tip lol

You have to mention it at the beginning of service, since that makes it easier for the Server/Waiter as they are taking your order when they go back to enter it in the system.

  DH & I go out to eat quite a bit. A majority of the time we either dine with family or friends. When we go out with friends we always split the check evenly among us. We don't care who ordered more drinks or who ate steak. We just enjoy the conversation & the laughter.

 When we go out with family, my son, DIL & her parents, one of us will pay the check. Sometimes, someone grabs it twice in a row.It doesn't matter, because it's all good. No one cares who ordered what. We just love being together.

 We would never ask for separate checks.It probably all evens out in the end.

Reminds me of my SIL - she always orders the most expensive food and drinks (usually 2) - but then she always expects her "big brother"  - my DH - to pay - and he does.  

She also offers repeatedly to "take us out" but somehow that never seems to happen.

If she and I go out, I ask for separate checks - just call me cheap (I'm sure she does) - I don't care.

I think it's not about being cheap or generous - it's what your experience has been.

When people continually take advantage, it gets old.

When everyone is reasonable, it's a very different situation.

When we go out to eat with friends we usually just split the bill. If we have had a glass of  wine or a drink and the others didn't, we still split the bill and insist on leaving the tip.  We are ridiculous tippers anyway as I earned my living as a server while in school and DH was a chef until he sold his restaurant. It all works out in the end. We go out with people we like and care about and would never let a couple of dollars interfere with our relationships with others.
