The only time we ask for separate checks is when we dine with those who are stingy tippers. That is a deal breaker for me.@nascarfan I get that we dislike stingy tippers . We always tip generously , waiting tables is hard work and good service deserves a great tip . We frequent this one particular restaurant, very nice local place with only 2 wait staff , it's a small place . Anyways we have gotten to know each waiter very well , service is beyond great ! We always included a more then usual 20% there. At Christmas we give each a card with money plus our usual tip . Good service deserves a good tip. I feel if you can't afford the tip stay home !
Just for the record ............ I usually put my meals on a credit card, but ALWAYS leave cash for the wait-person and put nothing on the credit card bill, just drawing a line through it.
I think wait staff should always get their tips in CASH for obvious reasons.
Anyone else do that?
we mostly pay in cash , and leave the tip in cash obviously.

I don't really care if you want to get separate checks, but don't mention it right off the bat or it comes across as cheap.
@JJsMom that's what I'm saying !!! That's the thing that rubs me the wrong way ! Also I don't like when someone scrutinizes the bill , takes out there phone to calculate etc.
that is the other issue.

When we go out with family, my son, DIL & her parents, one of us will pay the check. Sometimes, someone grabs it twice in a row.It doesn't matter, because it's all good. No one cares who ordered what. We just love being together.
We would never ask for separate checks.It probably all evens out in the end.
@NicksmomESQ it does !

I find it more insulting that, when splitting the check evenly, one party orders everything on the menu and another drink anytime the waiter walks nearby. I have friends who order a few appetizers each, the market price entree, 3 or 4 sides, then dessert, all the while having numerous drinks. I can't afford to eat out with them.

I still don't see why anyone thinks it is rude or not good upbringing to have separate checks. Seriously?
Putting ANY friend in a financial bind because they are paying for food and alcohol they didn't order is just .... rude and very bad manners. Not to mention very unkind.

I just heard from another old friend who lives several hours away. She'll be back home in a few weeks and was hoping to get some of "the girls" together and have lunch at the same pizza place from last week, Knowing the tightwad will be there too, I privately messaged the others and, without adding details, suggested that it would probably be best for us to do separate checks. They agreed.

If any of my friends were in that kind of financial bind, we would simply pick up the check. I would never go to anyplace that my friends could not afford. That's the thing about friends, we talk to each other openly.

Talking about personal matters such as financial position is not easy for many. To think that all your friends are always speaking openly all the time is silly. There have been times that money has been tight. Friends want to go out together, I will scrimp somewhere else so I can spend time with them....I will order within my budget. To ask me to pay more to cover part of your bill is rude, to have you pay for mine because you think I can't is insulting.
