I retired from teaching four years ago. Never had three full months off. Never started classes after Labor Day other than when I was a little girl. Each state requires a specific number of instructional days and a specific number of contract days for staff...local school boards determine the schedule of when the school year begins and ends. The tradition of starting after Labor Day began decades ago when children worked in the fields or on farms; the heat was even worse when I was a kid...no a/c, just those big old noisy fans...they just blew the hot air and your papers around.
