My kids do not go back to school until after Labor Day. More and more schools are starting earlier. The trend in my area is to go to what is called a Balanced Calendar. The kids have more 1 week breaks throughout the year such as a Thanksgiving a whole week instead of 2 days. They end the year later in June and start around the middle of August. The belief is that is will reduce the learning loss experienced over the summer.
As a working parent I can tell that my kids are getting a little stir crazy about now. I would love for them to be back in school right now.

I have read that some school districts are experiementing with year round school. They would have longer breaks durng the year and a much shorter summer vacation. They still meet the State mandated number of school days. Pro and Cons for sure.

I started first grade in 1968 and we had no air conditioning in any of the many elementary or junior high schools in my town. The only air conditioned schools were the two high schools back in the mid 70's. I about fell over when I walked in that first day of school in late August here in Texas and felt cool relief. Now of course they all have air, but back then each class had a fan in the front and a fan in the back of the class room. Way to early to start school even if it was 75º outside. July is still July, the month of National Hot Dog Day and Ice Cream Day not the mention Fire Works. Poor children sitting in desks right now instead of swimming ect...

Where in the world does school start in July? I know my grandchildren live in Florida and their school starts up in mid August, but July?
In Va (at least where I live) school starts up after labor day. They changed it for a year or two but people raised cane so much they changed it back.
When most of us went to school there was no such thing as air conditioning in the schools. Even when my daughters who are in their late thirties and fourties went to school, the school didn't have air conditioning. The irony though was that my girls would get off of school if the temp was exceptionally high.
Of course when I went we never got out due to high temps because only the wealthy had air conditioning. You opened up a window.
It seems like my grandchildren are off of school more than they go. There's always some reason school is closed (too much rain, too much snow, teacher workday, holiday, many of the reasons I don't understand).
Speaking of teachers, don't get me started on how little they get paid for what they do.......(sorry couldn't resist).

Many AZ schools are on the quarterly system. Instead of semesters, the school year is divided into quarters.
Fall, Winter and Spring. The fourth quarter is the Summer break. Quarters are usually 10 weeks.
There are breaks between the quarters. I don't see a poor kids situation. AZ schools all have A.C. they are just not off for such an extended time in the summer.

Parochial schools here in Ohio start Aug 22
Public Schools start the day after Labor Day...
I don't get why they do this....
