Re: Russian Olympic Commentators Very Rude

But ... but ... it must be true! It's in a Sting lyric! Wink

"In Europe and America there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Krushchev said, 'We will bury you'
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It'd be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too"

That's how it was reported at the time. I remember it. It scared me.

No, it's not how it was reported at the time. (See my post above) It's how you think you remember it because it's been mistold so many times over the years.

How old are you? I know how old I am, 66, and went through the Cold War and air raid drills, as I'm sure beammeupscottie did. Every time I heard a jet plane fly over head (we lived in San Francisco), my heart rate went through the ceiling and I raced to the livingroom drapes to see if we were being bombed. The paranoia was real and that sad excuse for a man made it worse and squashed the lives of the people living under his dictatorship.

Read my lips: we are not imagining something that you THINK did not occur. The press was all over this. Every newspaper, every TV news show, every radio station. IT WAS SCARY. It was an unbelievable time in which to live. BELIEVE ME! The shoe, the threat, they occurred. I wish I had access to videio archives. That's what you need.

Bravo! Sfnative you are EXACTLY right. I remember being terrified of planes going over. My 4th grade teacher actually said to us "I'll see you tomorrow if we're all here." I couldn't sleep at night. Interesting how people who didn't live through it know it all, eh?

I'm old enough. Have you ever heard the phrase "urban myth" or "urban legend"? It's something that never was but is repeated so often that people swear it happened. They swear they recall when and where it happened! It's like the phenomenon of implanted memories but in this case it's very easy to google and get the truth. It didn't happen but I accept that you and probably millions of others believe it did.

As for being terrified when you heard a jet plane overhead, you must have been a terribly nervous child. I am in my late 50's but I have sibs who were kids back then. They recall air raid drills (liked them because it was time away from class) and were not obsessed with thoughts of being attacked. My parents lived through World War II in Europe and actually describe having a "great" childhood. They say it never entered their heads that Britain might lose the war and, thankfully, their area was not heavily bombed. Most times children survive stressful times much better than adults.

You just plain don't know what you are talking about. Sorry but you are wrong.

You prove my point. It was never reported that way at the time.

Yes. It was. I remember it clearly. You can say it was reported wrong but you can't say it wasn't reported that way. You just plain don't know what you are talking about.

Then clearly it was your teacher who frightened you and that could happen to anyone at any time. Children in the U.S. in the 1950's were not terrified at the sound of airplanes. You too must have been a very neurotic child.

Re: Russian Olympic Commentators Very Rude

It was reported by many news outlets at the time that he banged his shoe. Later it clearly became an issue of urban myth or truth?

Many kids in America at the time were subjected to school drills like getting under their desks for security reasons, and it was the time numerous families in the 'burbs built bomb shelters. Some were obsessed with it.
