BTW, it annoys the you know what out of me that the NBC coverage never shows the medal ceremony unless an American is on the podium. I'm talking about popular events too. There are many Americans with roots in other countries who would like to see those ceremonies. You can stream them but not everyone has that ability. Just annoying.

I agree. While I always root for the U.S. to win, I do want more air time for medalists from other countries. That's what makes the Olympics so great (seeing people from all over the world).

Re: Russian Olympic Commentators Very Rude

I'm sure in Australia the coverage of the Olympics focuses strongly on the Australian athletes.

I'm sure in France, the coverage of the Olympics focuses strongly on the French athletes.

I'm sure in Canada, the coverage of the Olympics focuses strongly on the Canadian athletes.

So, why are people so surprised that in America, the focus of the Olympics is on the American athletes.

Do you really think that in Germany, when an American wins gold, that they show the athlete on the podium listening to our National anthem?

I doubt it.

I think if one really wants to see wall-to-wall coverage of the Olympics, and not to miss a single second of any medal ceremony, the best thing to do is to just attend the Olympics yourself.

That way, you can't be "outraged" over the coverage.

If I remember correctly, Khrushchev (during a speech) took off his shoe, pounded it on the podium, and said WE WILL BURY YOU!........"you" meaning the USA.

You don't remember it correctly but you remember it in the same biased way that most Americans do. Whether he banged it or, as this excerpt from the NYT says, waved it, it had nothing to do with the U.S.. He was upset with a delegation from the Phillipines.

As for the "we will bury you" quote, there is no corroboration that he ever said that. It's now thought to be something told third hand by someone in the press misquoting someone in the diplomatic corps and it never had any connection with his appearance at the U.N.. Not surprising.

The celebrated shoe was allegedly banged on Oct. 13, 1960. A New York Times correspondent, Benjamin Welles, reported that Khrushchev was reacting to a speech by a Philippine delegate who charged that the Soviet Union had "swallowed up" Eastern Europe and "deprived [it] of political and civil rights." According to Welles, Khrushchev "pulled off his right shoe, stood up and brandished the shoe at the Philippine delegate on the other side of the hall. He then banged his shoe on the desk." Yet another Times man, James Feron, who was at the United Nations but did not write a story, recalls, "I actually saw Khrushchev not bang his shoe." According to Feron, whom I interviewed in 2002, the Soviet leader "leaned over, took off a slip-on shoe, waved it pseudomenacingly, and put it on his desk, but he never banged his shoe."

No, it's not how it was reported at the time. (See my post above) It's how you think you remember it because it's been mistold so many times over the years.

Re: Russian Olympic Commentators Very Rude

I believe the alleged "We will bury you" quote is half correct, and very misleadingly reported.

What Khruschev apparently said was "We will bury you in the peaceful fields of economics," meaning nothing more than communism was the wave of the future. The press and media, in the paranoid spirit of the Cold War, conveniently left out the second half of the remark.

As to his apparent wish to incinerate the West, we should note his gamesmanship during the Cuban missile crisis. It appears that he never intended to use those missiles as anything more than a bargaining chip. Castro, on the other hand, raised the idea of a nuclear strike against the US, which prompted Khruschev to say, in so many words, "the man is insane."

Finally, that "bury you" remark, however accurately or inaccurately it has been quoted over the decades, was made at a diplomatic reception at the Polish Embassy in Moscow, not at the UN.

How old are you? I know how old I am, 66, and went through the Cold War and air raid drills, as I'm sure beammeupscottie did. Every time I heard a jet plane fly over head (we lived in San Francisco), my heart rate went through the ceiling and I raced to the livingroom drapes to see if we were being bombed. The paranoia was real and that sad excuse for a man made it worse and squashed the lives of the people living under his dictatorship.

Read my lips: we are not imagining something that you THINK did not occur. The press was all over this. Every newspaper, every TV news show, every radio station. IT WAS SCARY. It was an unbelievable time in which to live. BELIEVE ME! The shoe, the threat, they occurred. I wish I had access to videio archives. That's what you need.

OMG! I've just read another response. You people are so soft on the Soviet Union. You definitely need to do some homework!!! You've absolutely no idea what occurred or what the consequences were. Unbelievable.

Re the Cuban missile crisis, you definitely need to throw JFK into the mix. A badly defining moment of his presidency which cost lives...

I'm old enough. Have you ever heard the phrase "urban myth" or "urban legend"? It's something that never was but is repeated so often that people swear it happened. They swear they recall when and where it happened! It's like the phenomenon of implanted memories but in this case it's very easy to google and get the truth. It didn't happen but I accept that you and probably millions of others believe it did.

As for being terrified when you heard a jet plane overhead, you must have been a terribly nervous child. I am in my late 50's but I have sibs who were kids back then. They recall air raid drills (liked them because it was time away from class) and were not obsessed with thoughts of being attacked. My parents lived through World War II in Europe and actually describe having a "great" childhood. They say it never entered their heads that Britain might lose the war and, thankfully, their area was not heavily bombed. Most times children survive stressful times much better than adults.
