Wouldn't bother me, I would have said, "Oh, Dad left his money to his favorite charity". And, then added, "He wanted me to be independent". That should shut the rude person up.

While I agree that some people give out too much personal infomation which in turn opens the door for questions-sometimes a death in the family is not a secret in the workplace.
Therefore, in @Anonymous032819 case I would think her loss was known.
All the co-worker had to say was "I'm sorry for your loss" and leave it at that. It was an ignorant question.
However, I don't believe all persons who ask rude questions are necessarily bad people.

Someone on this board once mentioned that a non-confrontational answer would be to say "If you forgive me for not answering, I will forgive you for asking".
Why make a enemy?

I usually ignore any question I don't want to answer and completely change the subject.

That would be good response. Honestly, I don't know why some posters feel they have to dance around and make up lies and play nice when someone asks a question they don't want to answer. What is wrong with honesty? It's not unusual today to have someone ask you how much you make, how much you paid for your home and a host of other personal questions. My stock answer is "That's a very personal question and I'm not going to answer it".

Yes, oh yes.... my favorite: "Have you found Jesus?"
Answer: "I never lost him."
Religion to me is extreme personal and I highly resent personal questions. I usually answer politely but they also don't get a real answer. ![]()

Good grief! Does this come from people you know? Or are we talking about street corner stuff?

Yes, from someone I have known my entire life. We lost contact for years. When we restablished contact it was one of the first things she asked me. She knew I have faith, just not "her" faith.

@Q4u, unbelievable (pun intended).
