I have huge issues with the amount of money hosting countries spend for this event when there is such abject poverty and horrible conditions in these 3rd world countries. Why don't the powers that be, find a neutral  venue location for the summer and the winter games and let a  hosting country come in and re do the venues as needed, instead of going all over the world and starting from the ground up to build all this. I am horrified looking at the pollution in the water around Rio and then getting told that there is no problem with the water quality-----give me a break!!!! And what about Zika--that in itself can affect a whole generation of people. And then just random terrorism in general.

There has been so much negative talk about these Olympics.  Hope everyone is wrong and the athletes have a wonderful time.

I too hope that nothing bad happens, but the conditions, security and environment there are not good.  It isn't being "negative" to shed light on these concerns and talk about them.

I really hope that th event goes off without a hitch, but it isn't being "wrong" for us to worry...

Actually, men have to worry about the zika virus, too.

"But Zika has been found in the ****** of infected men -- and it's unknown how long it stays there and over what period of time a man can transmit the virus through sex.
Other infectious disease experts agree: Reproductively speaking, men -- not women -- have the most reason for concern after visiting a country with a large Zika outbreak."

This is from a CNN article of why men are pulling out of the Olympics, too.

Reminds me of the Ebola virus. Long after they thought people were "cured" of the virus, they started finding it "hiding" in  eyes and in other weird places like the male reproductive liquids (lol since we can't type the word). Scary.

I don't blame the males from backing out. The studies on how long the virus remains in the liquid (sorry..) only goes out to about 2 months. So they don't really know how long it can live and hide out there, they just know it can for at least 2 months. And if you wan to start a family at some point or have more kids, why take the risk?

For the life of me I don't understand why Rio was chosen.  Some athletes are now backing off which is sad because the Olypics will be out of balance - some of the best will not be there.

For me, I have lost so much interest in the Olympics that I can't remember the last time I paid attention to the games themselves.

Bingo. It's all about the bribes.  *Especially* when Third World Countries are involved. These countries survive on bribery from the top to the bottom.
