@Shihtzursqmom   I know my brother cut his teeth on zwibeck toast.  My mom loved it buttered.  Hmmm, I now have to see if they are still made.

No, but I certainly know what those are. My mom was so freaking routine about everything. She bought the same food every week. But she barely cooked, so there was not much food in the house. Breakfast was at home. Lunch was at school or work for my dad. We ate out a LOT of dinners. I shudder to think of all the money spent eating out.

@Bonkers1  We sometimes had them, but the staple in our home was Stella D'oro anisette toast.

@Queen of shop  My mom baked but when she did bring home store bought we had Stella D'oro anisette toast too. Once in a while the Stella D'oro Margherite Vanilla or Chocolate cookies and sometimes both flavors in one package.

@Bonkers1 I remember them but we didn't have them at home.

@Cakers3  I liked the Margherite's too. Actually any Stella D'oro are fine by me. LOL. Another favorite one of mine was Breakfast Treats. I used to call them "S" cookies.

True story....when I was young, there were so many salesmen that went door to door in our neighborhood. There was a Fuller Brush man, Stanley products, a man that sold bleach, one that sold powered  laundry soap, a man that sold drapes and curtains, an egg man, a fish monger with a truck covered in ice.  Just all kinds of merchandise came to your street. We even had a fresh fruit peddlar that had a open air pickup truck with a scale swinging from the back. The salesmen were very fair and had good reputations.

Most women did not drive at that time and the salesmen came to them.

There was a Stella D'oro salesman too. The boxes that he sold were five pounds. HUGE boxes of anisette toast. Loads of my Italian relatives lived within walking distance of my home and everyone of them had the same five pound box of anisette toast. It was a hoot to be able to walk to their homes and be offered a cookie and a cold glass of milk.Woman LOL

My mother diidn't like to cook, but she did not buy convenience foods.

'One afternoon, we were watching  "Qjeen for a Day" (a 50s show) and  she said, If  I could be queen for a day, I would ask for a cook!

She made a meal daily for eight people then, and she hated cooking.

I was her prep cook. and this is how I discovered that I loved cooking.  Love it to this day,

But cookding for eight people is a tough gig.  I think she did well--I alone know most of her favorite reicpes--and she gave me a gift at the same time she taught me to cook.

Miss my late mom to this day.

Stella D'oro Cookies Social Media — Cat Penfold

Love Stella D'oro cookies but left California 30 years ago to move to New Mexico.

Guess what?  No Stella D'oro cookies here.

One day I noticed Target was selling a couple varieties.  I stocked up.

Recently checked their website and they no longer carry them.

Thank goodness there's one tiny Italian bakery in this town. Woman LOL

@Queen of shop  You're a great storyteller- I enjoyed reading all of your descriptions of the different door to door salesmen in your childhood neighborhood!  The Stella D' Oro cookies sound delicious 🙂.
