People will find their own reasons to give or not give money, to volunteer or not volunteer to different charities.

I give throughout the year to local organizations.  When there is a major catastrophe, I will donate to the Red Cross.

As for CEO salaries:  a poster hit the nail on the head.  The scope of the responsibilities is extensive: There is no " Off Switch " at the end of the day or week.  Organizations that serve the public when devastations occur need to have funds for many purposes:  readily accessible data available from computers; ability to deploy people and resources immediately; ability to maintain a well-trained, dedicated staff; and, and ability to maintain funding relationships to ensure today's needs are met as well as reserves for the future.

Emergencies can happen at any time.  To have dependable options in place and ready to meet needs takes great administrative personnel.   Talent does not come cheap.

How are you donating your time, talent or treasure ?

If you cannot or do not want to donate $ to the Red Cross,

how about blood donations ?  This is one thing for which there is no substitute.

I hope when all Hurricane- related issues are done, that politics will not rear its ugly head and cause those organizations who have helped humans and animals to be vilified.

Financial and resource accountability are very important.  So is the on-going strength of character of those who guide for-profit and non-profit organizations.  These folks will be in my prayers for continued success.

@jlkz

I've done volunteer work for the Red Cross twice.  One summer when I was in high school, and then again for a longer time in my early 20s.

Have you? I only wonder because it seems you are suggesting others volunteer.

Not choosing to donate by way of the Red Cross DOES NOT mean people aren't donating to other charities for Texas and Florida victims.  I don't like this new approach in charity shaming or anger because some posters choose alternative charities for the hurricane victims.

Re: Red Cross - And Donations

Thank you for sharing QVC news link @sunshine45.  It is good to know QVC did in fact partner in giving.   I errored in reading only the FAQ page that was associated with link to donate.  I do appreciate and welcome correction when I am wrong ....... which is often.

I will never give to Red Cross. During Floyd I had to work at our local mall and got to see a side of them that I did not like. Princeville had NO water they could drink. Our town's water was up and running. Instead of sending this water where it was needed they gave it away. Local mom and pop stores came and got it and then turn around and sold it for a profit. Also the local furniture companies donated furniture and before they closed the location they had bins upon bins with new furniture that they took axes too and tore up to keep anyone from getting it. It's a shame how these people can destroy and demolish items when you have people in need of these items.

So, I will try Samaritians Purse since they seem to be pretty good according to Charity Navigator - also thanks to the one that posted this site. It help me a lot.

I sent this message from the last living brain cell I have.

Regarding the Red Cross Blood Bank "making money" from blood donations:

Every step of the processing involves expensive machines, technical expertise and supplies. Who would be okay with any of the steps below being skipped? Think any are unnecessary? Think they should all be free? Keep in mind that blood donated to hospital blood banks is certainly charged for, as most of the same procedures are followed except those related to national/regional data/record keeping.

Step 1: The Donation
. Donor registers
. Health history and mini physical are completed
. About 1 pint of blood and several small test tubes are collected from each donor
. The bag, test tubes and the donor record are labeled with an identical bar code label to keep track of the donation
. The donation is stored in iced coolers until it is transported to a Red Cross center

Step 2: Processing
. Donated blood is scanned into a computer database
. Most blood is spun in centrifuges to separate the transfusable components – red cells, platelets, and plasma
. The primary components like plasma, can be further manufactured into components such as cryoprecipitate
. Red cells are then leuko-reduced
. Single donor platelets are leukoreduced and bacterially tested.
. Test tubes are sent for testing.

Step 3: Testing
. Steps 2 and 3 take place in parallel
. The test tubes are received in one of three Red Cross National Testing Laboratories
. A dozen (emphasis mine) tests are performed on each unit of donated blood – to establish the blood type and test for infectious diseases
. Test results are transferred electronically to the manufacturing facility within 24 hours
. If a test result is positive, the unit is discarded and the donor is notified. Test results are confidential and are only shared with the donor, except as may be required by law

Step 4: Storage

. When test results are received, units suitable for transfusion are labeled and stored
. Red Cells are stored in refrigerators at 6ºC for up to 42 days
. Platelets are stored at room temperature in agitators for up to five days
. Plasma and cryo are frozen and stored in freezers for up to one year

Step 5: Distribution

. Blood is available to be shipped to hospitals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

@Moonchilde

My Mother and Grandmother volunteered at the Red Cross for years.  My Mother volunteered at the Blood Bank.  Checking people in and calling donors in emergencies.  My Grandmother was rolling bandages in World War I, a plane spotter in World War II, serving food during local "disasters" such as floods, earthquakes, etc.  It always makes makes me sad to hear the comments of some about a organization that has done so much good throughout the years.

@DiAnne, it's far simpler to believe every negative thing these days, made easy by fake news and the now ever-present via media types of axes to grind.

We believe what we want to believe, and we can find support for what we want to believe, no matter what it is.

AFAIC, common sense would indicate that every major media outlet of any type, as well as many if not most large corporations (including peopes' beloved QVC) would not put out "please donate to the Red Cross, we are," if they were aware a large percentage of the donations were being wasted. These are news media - how/why would they not know what's true and what isn't, and why on earth would they not report it and continue to recommend donations to the RC?

ETA: Why aren't people slamming/shaming as "dumb" QVC's Red Cross banner and their matching donation? Why haven't posters started threads calling out QVC for their choice of what charity they promote donating to, and the charity QVC themselves have donated to? People start happily and easily start threads bashing QVC for anything and everything, why not this? It seems to me someone would, if they feel that strongly that the RC is a "bad" charity to donate to.

Why is it necessary to insult people who don't agree?  And because of what charity they prefer or don't prefer...

Sad to make giving an alter for attack.

Re: Red Cross - And Donations

I already said I had worked for the Red Cross. I got a lot of stories from those who actually knew what they were talking about.  RC may not be my first choice but I am not going to trash them.

I don't go on free-floating "belief," I go on evidence.

@Noel7  I just checked out the much touted Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah and they don't rate so high either. They pay their chairman and CFO over $200K annually and rake in huge amounts of money.   I don't know where they came from or how they got there but they sure get funds from somewhere.

@Kachina624

That's sad, too.  This is all so heavy, making money off of the sorrow of animals.

Why shouldn't their officers make a good salary? Just because someone works for a sanctuary does not mean that they don't work hard or tirelessly or care about animals. I've been there as a volunteer and believe me without them, this country's homeless and abused animals would all be put to death. they took in Vick's dogs and rehomed many of them to wonderful families, They go out into communities and spay and neuter animals for free, they go on reservations to help and educate people on proper pet ownership, they take in animals from all over the country in disasters because the local shelters are full and would have to put them down. they do much, much more.

do you think all that happens without people planning and working hard to get it done?

Why is a high paying job scoffed at here yet it's okay to pay CEO's of hospitals $5 million dollars (like the Cleveland Clinic's CEO was paid). Isn't that supposed to be a charitable place, ie helping people?

It chaps my drawers when someone puts down a person for working hard because they feel that person should give all the money to the animals and take little in return.

BTW, they do provide excellent care for the animals. Excellent. did you know if you adopt from them, they will fly the animal anywhere in the country?

I think they give plenty to help out the animals and people. How do they get money? People pay membership dues, corporations donate to them, plenty of places, none of them unsavory ill-gotten gains.

THEY ARE NOT MAKING MONEY OFF THE SORROW OF ANIMALS. i SUGGEST YOU GO ON FB AND LOOK UP HANDSOME DAN'S RESCUE AND READ THE STORY OF HOW IT CAME TO BE.

Your statement infers that they salaried employees live like kings while the animals in their care are sorrowfully kept in metal cages.

BTW, if they rake in huge amounts of money and the top 2 officers only get $400,000 out of the millions they "rake in", I'd say that's a pittance.
