Many years ago we saw him on the same bill as Joan Rivers at Westbury Music Fair

There is a really good documentary on his life. "Mr Warmth, The Don Rickles Project." (2007)

There are funny clips and over 30 people were interviewed including Joan Rivers and Sidney Poitier.

I thought it was interesting, sweet and funny.

Jimmy Kimmell came out crying tonight.  He was good friends with DR.  He talked about their dinners together and read some of the ThAnk you notes DR sent him. He had a tough time holding back the tears.  Showed clips.

@qvcaddition this clip from Jimmy Kimmel's show made me cry as his emotions were so raw and real and a genuine tribute to Mr. Rickles from a clearly genuine fan:

A truly funny man and a lovely human being.  I'm sure he's making them laugh up in heaven.  May in RIP

I was never a fan of the man and never thought he was very funny. Kind of the same way I felt about Joan Rivers. But I've been hearing about what a sweet person he really was, now that he is gone. Maybe if I heard that before he died , my opinion would have been different. Not that my opinion counts for much. Just not into that type of verbal abuse for laughs.

I'm sure he was probably a very nice man off stage, but I just never found his "humor" funny. To say he was abrasive is an understatement. I found him to be angry and mean spirited on stage. I know it was a personna, but I am not drawn to that kind of humor.

I have been shocked by other comedians who did roasts such as the one for Justin Beiber. The one for Joan Rivers was probably bad too I'll have to look it up. Then there is Chelsea Handler who is beyond terrible going after people's kids.So I don't really understand all the negative feelings about just DR. I think he was very funny most of the time. As he got older I think he forgot his lines and mumbled a bunch of unintelligible stuff.

Who said the negative feelings were JUST about Don Rickles??? He is the subject of the thread. If you want to start a thread about Chelsea Handler, I can give you an earful, or in this case, an eyeful about her. All I said was that I didn't appreciate Rickles' style of humor. I don't feel compelled to laugh at him.

Whoever referred to him as "abrasive" should hang his/her head in shame.

Rickles was one of the funniest people around.  His nickmname was "Mr. Warmth" and by the end of his act everyone was sweating in laughter.  He NEVER hurt anyone with his humor.  He even kept today's generation in stitches of laughter.

We are losing a genre of comedians that will never be replaced.  It is sad.

@Cats3000

I realize there are people who have NO sense of humor or who are just very DULL. No one would think Joan Rivers or Don Rickles were abrasive!!!!! I guess u just have to understand the humor. These 2 - and others - were true professionals --- they needed to entertain. Imagine the world without these 2 comics --------- nothing to laugh about anymore as the world has gotten so evil.

There was a time in the 1950s/60s/70s/80s and 90s --- when we had so much talent on tv. So much entertainment - comics, singers, dancers, tv hosts, ie, Merv Griffin, Steve Allen, Johnny Carson. Today - most of us get depressed just turning on the tv.
